Box Score DENVER, Colo. -- The Omaha volleyball team put together a dominant effort to open its first Summit League Championship appearance Friday night, sweeping Oral Roberts 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-10) at Hamilton Gymnasium. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 18-12 (12-4 Summit League) and advance to Saturday's semifinal action vs. IUPUI, while the Golden Eagles drop to 14-16 (8-8 Summit League).
Sophomore setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy earned her team-leading 22nd double-double of the year with 25 assists and 10 digs, as well as three blocks, three kills and an ace.
Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey posted a match-high nine kills with two aces for the night. Senior rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer finished with a seven kills on .636 hitting with no attack errors, adding three blocks and two digs. Senior middle blocker Amy Taylor, playing in her home state, matched Schimmer with seven kills and posted a match-best four blocks.
Senior middle blocker Megan Schmale added five kills on .500 hitting with three more blocks. And senior libero Kimberly Bailey had an outstanding serving night, finishing with a career-high five service aces to tie the Mavericks' season high by an individual this season.
As a team, Omaha hit .329, its second-best effort for the season, while holding ORU to a -.028 tally. The Mavericks also outblocked the Golden Eagles 8-2.
Oral Roberts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one, initiated by a Lucija Bojanjac service ace to start the match. Omaha then went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead on a solo Taylor block. The teams continued to trade points before ORU, led by Jovana Poljasvic on the serve, took the next three points to go up 7-5. A kill by Schimmer brought the Mavs within one at 7-6 and sparked a rally for Omaha. An attack error by ORU's Laura Milos on the next ball knotted the score at 7-7, and the Mavericks never looked back. Omaha went on an 18-6 run from that point and closed the set with Horkey ace to take the first game 25-13.
In the second set, ORU jumped out early again, grabbing the first point of the set on an attack error. Omaha took the next five points, however, as Taylor started the surge with a powerful kill to the right side. A block by Schmale and freshman Gessica Gdowski, followed by a Gdowski kill, an ORU error and a well-placed kill by Schimmer spotted UNO a 5-1 advantage. Omaha struck down a 6-3 Golden Eagles rally with an O'Shaughnessy/Schmale stop coupled with a Horkey kill, extending the Mavs' lead to 10-7. From there, ORU grabbed six of the next seven points to regain the lead at 13-11, forcing Omaha to call timeout. The two teams then exchanged the next four points to make it 15-13, before the Mavericks went ahead for good at 16-15 on a kill down the middle from Schmale. A block assist from O'Shaughnessy/Schmale and an ORU attack error then made it 18-15. A denial at the net by Taylor/Schimmer capped a 7-5 run for Omaha, which seized game two at 25-20.
The Mavericks took complete control in the third set, dominating both sides of the ball. An 8-0 highlighted spurt was highlighted by back-to-back blocks from Schimmer and Taylor, making it 10-1 Omaha. Later in the game, the Mavericks used two ORU errors and a Schimmer kill to extend their lead to 18-7. The Golden Eagles then went on a 3-1 run, trimming the margin to single digits at 19-10. It would prove to be ORU's final points of the evening, as Omaha closed the match on a 6-0 run with the help of three service aces from Bailey. The effort capped the set at 25-10 and completed the Mavericks' third sweep of Oral Roberts this season.
Omaha returns to action Saturday night for the Summit League semifinals in Denver, Colo. The Mavericks will face second-seeded IUPUI at 8:30 p.m. (CT), and the match will be televised on Altitude/Altitude 2, where available. Links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
