Tre'Shawn Thurman had a clutch performance for his second career double-double, finishing with game highs of 30 points and 11 rebounds. The Omaha Central product shot 11-of-16 from the field and 7-for-9 at the line and added two steals and a block.
Senior guard
Devin Patterson added a season-high 19 points, helped by a 10-of-11 effort at the free throw line, with two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior forward
Jake White also had a key performance at the line, finishing 13-of-16 en route to 17 points, seven rebounds and a block.
Senior guard
Tim Smallwood was the Mavericks' fourth double-figure scorer, totaling 11 points with two 3-pointers and four boards.
As a team, Omaha shot 42 percent (27-of-64) from the floor to UMKC's 45 percent (30-of-67), which was aided by 12 3-pointers. UNO was also 75 percent (36-of-48) from the free throw line and outrebounded the 'Roos 45-37, including 16-9 on the offensive end.
UMKC was led by a double-double from Darius Austin, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the night. Martez Harrison (18 points), LaVell Boyd (17) and Aleer Leek (11) also had double-figure scoring efforts.
Omaha raced out to an 11-2 lead to open the game, making four of their first six shots from the floor. The 'Roos trimmed it to 18-15 at 11:47, then eventually tied the game at 22-22 on a Harrison 3-pointer with 8:54 left in the half. The Mavericks then regained the lead, 25-22, on a Smallwood free throw and a jumper from sophomore
Daniel Meyer before a Smallwood triple extended it to 28-22. UNO surged to a 37-30 advantage with just under two minutes left in the half with a driving Patterson bucket, but a 9-2 Kangaroo run, punctuated by threes from Austin and Kyle Steward, finished the first stanza with a 39-39 tie.
Boyd opened the second half with back-to-back scores for the 'Roos, followed by an Austin layup, which gave the 'Roos their first lead of the night at 45-39. UMKC led the entire second half, going up by as much as 10 with 10:40 remaining, but the Mavericks staged a comeback with the help of 16 points and seven rebounds from Thurman, 10 points from Patterson and another nine from White. UNO shot just 30 percent (7-of-23) from the field in the half but went to the line 36 times, shooting 81 percent (29-of-36) to fire its second-half rally.
After two White free throws saw Omaha pull within one at 70-69, the 'Roos used a 7-0 surge over the next 1:14 on a Leek 3-pointer and two Boyd layups to lead by eight. But the Mavericks continued to fight, with a Thurman rebounding his own missed free throw for a dunk and a pair of Hollins free throws bringing UNO within two at 77-75 with 2:13 left. After Patterson hit two foul shots to make it a two-point margin again at 82-80, he single-handedly tied the game with a 3-point play, as his reverse layup and free throw knotted it at 83-83. The 'Roos put up one more 3-point attempt before the buzzer, but the miss sent the game to overtime.
UMKC failed to make a field goal in the overtime period, shooting 0-for-7 and scoring its six points on free throws. The Mavericks, meanwhile, heated up to go 4-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 at the line. A layup from White and three straight Thurman buckets spotted Omaha a 91-85 advantage with 1:55 to go. After two Austin free throws brought the 'Roos within four, White and Patterson knocked down four foul shots to stretch UNO's lead to 95-87 with 16 seconds remaining. Though Harrison drew a foul and hit both of his shots, it was too little, too late, as Omaha took the 95-89 win for its first overtime victory of the season.
