Box Score FARGO, N.D. -- The Omaha volleyball team won a five-set battle for its third consecutive conference win Saturday night, defeating North Dakota State 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-25, 15-12) at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 8-8 (3-0 Summit League), while the Bison dropped to 11-7 (2-3 Summit League).
Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey led UNO with 14 kills alongside 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and her third in as many matches. Sophomore setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy also had her 10th double-double of the year on 46 assists and 17 digs with three aces and two blocks.
Senior middle blockers Megan Schmale and Amy Taylor finished with 11 kills apiece, and Schmale hit at a .417 attacking clip for the night. Taylor led the match with nine blocks, which tied her career high.
Senior libero Kimberly Bailey led the Mavericks defensively with 20 digs, while senior outside hitter Kelley Wollak added 14 digs and nine kills.
North Dakota State had three players finish with double-figure kill nights: Jenni Fassbender (21), Emily Miron (12) and Emily Minnick (11). Brianna Rasmussen tallied a double-double on 44 assists and 14 digs.
As a team, Omaha outblocked North Dakota State 11-9, while the Bison outhit the Mavericks .182 to .167.
NDSU picked up a 25-21 in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Omaha trailed early but finally earned the lead at 19-18 on a Bison ball handling error. The score then tied at 19-19 and 23-23, but the Mavericks prevailed with back-to-back kills from Schmale, who gave UNO the win at 25-23 and tied the match at 1-1.
North Dakota State held a 2-1 advantage to start game three, but the Mavericks took over and capitalized with a 5-0 run that put them up 6-2. From there, Omaha refused to give up its lead and later took a seven-point advantage at 23-16 on a Schimmer kill. Two straight Maverick kills from Taylor and Horkey clinched the set at 25-18, putting UNO ahead 2-1.
The Bison would not go down without a fight, however, as they captured the fourth game, 25-15. Omaha ultimately outlasted them in the deciding set though, working out to a fast 5-0 lead with the help of Schimmer/Taylor and Taylor/Wollak blocks, kills from Wollak and Horkey and an O'Shaughnessy ace. The Mavericks took their largest lead of the set at 11-5 with a Schmale kill, then used two late Wollak kills to capture the set win at 15-12 and the match at 3-2.
Omaha returns to action next weekend, traveling to Oral Roberts on Friday, Oct. 9. The match is set for 6 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla., and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
