UNO came out strong in the opening set, attacking at a .340 clip with the help of nine kills from Horkey, who hit .412, and six more from Schmale, who came in at .556. A close set the entire way, the score tied 17 times until the final stall at 21-21. Schmale and Gdowski took over from there, putting up an assisted block and a combined three kills for four straight points that gave Omaha the 25-21 win.
Set two was decidedly UNO's. The Mavericks responded to a 10-10 tie by rattling off four straight points with a Pioneer ball handling error and three consecutive Schmale kills. After Omaha worked out to a 20-13 lead on a Schmale ace and an O'Shaughnessy kill, Denver took a timeout and came back with a short 4-0 run to make it 20-17. Following a Maverick timeout, kills from Horkey, Gdowski and Schmale helped it along to set point at 24-19, and one last block from Gdowski and Schmale finished the game at 25-19 for a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, Omaha and Denver battled to a 9-9 tie before Omaha capitalized on three straight DU errors to shoot ahead 12-9. Following a 14-11 Maverick lead, the Pioneers rallied for three straight points to knot the score again at 14-14. A Schmale kill and back-to-back Denver attack errors forced a DU timeout, but the Pioneers never pulled within more than two for the remainder of the set. Though they threatened with three straight scores to make it 23-21, Omaha took a timeout and quickly nailed down consecutive kills from Taylor and Schmale, closing the set at 25-21 and sealing the match victory at 3-0.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Oct. 30, visiting South Dakota at 7 p.m. in Vermillion, S.D. Links to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
