The Pioneers took an early 7-3 lead to start the match, but UNO rattled off four straight points with three DU errors and a Schmale kill to tie at 7-7. The score stalled four more times up to 13-13, when Omaha again knotted it with an O'Shaughnessy kill. Denver slowly pulled away and used consecutive kills from Schmid and Cassie Baird to lead 19-15. Though the Mavericks pulled within three on three occasions -- including at 24-21 on back-to-back Taylor kills -- DU's Kayla Principato settled it with a final kill to give the Pioneers the 25-21 win.
Game two was a close battle that included 12 ties. Omaha enjoyed a quick 6-2 lead early, but Denver brought it to 8-8 on a Maverick error and a Schmid ace. UNO then tied it at 11-11 on a Pioneer attack error, then again at 13-13 with a Taylor kill, after which DU built a 5-1 run to go ahead 18-14. The Mavericks weren't done, however, as back-to-back kills by Schimmer and Wollak tied the set once more at 21-21 and forced a Denver timeout. Four more ties pushed the game to 26-26 and Omaha took a timeout on the next play, after which Horkey put down an immediate kill out of the break to make it 27-27. Despite UNO's best efforts, Denver had the last word with a kill and an ace from Corrujedo that ended the set at 29-27.
DU never trailed in the third game, hitting .321 as a team. The Pioneers worked out to a 12-6 lead before Omaha called a timeout, then went on an 8-1 run for a 20-7 advantage. Denver went on to a 25-14 set win and the match victory, 3-0.
Having completed its two-week road stint, Omaha returns home next weekend for a pair of conference matches at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks host Fort Wayne on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
