Box Score 2 OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha volleyball team played a close pair of matches on Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Omaha Classic, falling 3-2 to both Drake (25-20, 23-25, 19-25, 28-26, 12-15) and UMKC (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 11-15) at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks are now 1-2 (0-0 Summit League) on the season.
Junior outside hitter Kelly Wollak had an outstanding day, finishing with a double-double in both matches. In the opener against the Bulldogs, the Bloomington, Minn., native notched 17 kills and a career-best 31 digs, then followed up with a career-high 21 kills and 12 digs in the nightcap against UMKC. For her efforts, Wollak was named to the all-tournament team.
“Kelley today showed really and truly what a Division I outside hitter is, and that is the type of player who can hold the team on her shoulders,” head coach
Rose Shires said. “She's the type of player who can score. She has that attitude and that aura about her on the floor. I'm very pleased with her performance this weekend, and I look for that to continue out on the court.”
MATCH 1: DRAKE 3, OMAHA 2Omaha opened the day against DU, led by Wollak's 17 kills. Junior middle blocker
Megan Schmale added 13, and junior setter
Michaela Schimmer narrowly missed a triple-double with 12 kills, 22 assists and nine digs. Freshman setter
Sydney O'Shaughnessy also posted a double-double with a match-best 34 assists and 26 digs.
In addition, freshman outside hitter
Mackenzie Horkey totaled 13 digs and eight kills, while
Kimberly Bailey had another 14 digs. The Mavericks were led at the net by four blocks apiece from Schmale, Schimmer and junior middle blocker
Diane Banderas.
As a team, Omaha hit .132 for the match to Drake's .196 and outblocked the Bulldogs, 8-5.
The match proved a battle, as Omaha started it off with a 25-20 win in the opening set. Drake took a 2-1 advantage after wins in the second and third sets, 25-23 and 25-19. The Mavericks rallied in the fourth game, outlasting the Bulldogs in a 28-26 win, but DU came back in the fifth set, 15-12, to take the match at 3-2.
MATCH 2: UMKC 3, OMAHA 2Wollak once again led the charge for Omaha in the second match, finishing with another double-double, and her 21 kills were a tournament high. Banderas also had nine blocks to tie a tournament best set Friday night, and she added four kills as well. Banderas single-handedly tied Kansas City's team block total and led the Mavericks to outblock the 'Roos, 14-9.
O'Shaughnessy and Schimmer complemented their earlier performances as both achieved a second double-double. O'Shaughnessy finished with 23 assists and 15 digs, while Schimmer added 20 assists and 19 digs to go along with six blocks and five kills. Horkey also joined the double-double party with 12 kills and 11 digs for the night, hitting .303.
As a team, UNO hit .192 for the match, while Kansas City finished at a .164 clip. After opening with a 25-17 win in the first set, Omaha saw UMKC even the match at 1-1. The Mavericks then bounced back for a 25-21 win in game three before the 'Roos came back for their own 25-21 victory in the fourth set. UMKC ultimately pulled out a 15-11 win in the deciding set, taking the match at 3-2.
“I felt our team did a great job this weekend really fighting in each match,” Shires said. “Obviously we were in each match with the opportunity to win. I was very pleased with our outside hitter performance.
Kelley Wollak had a solid weekend, and as we went through today, we also saw
Mackenzie Horkey solidify herself as a as a solid outside hitter with the ability to get kills. I also think we did a great job blocking.
Omaha returns to action next weekend at the Cyclone Classic, opening with host Iowa State on Thursday, Sept. 4. The match is set for 6:30 p.m. in Ames, Iowa, and links to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
