Mavs Start Strong in 3-1 Win Over Central Michigan

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team (1-0, 0-0 Summit League) team opened the 2014 season Friday night, defeating Central Michigan 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 12-25, 25-14) at Sapp Fieldhouse.

Junior outside hitter Kelley Wollak led Omaha a double-double on 11 kills and 10 digs. Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey also finished with double-figure digs (11), and junior libero Kimberly Bailey had 13.

Freshman setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy had 19 assists, and junior setter Michaela Schimmer notched 16 assists, six digs and six blocks. Junior middle blocker Megan Schmale paced UNO at the net, posting nine blocks for the night.

As a team, Omaha outhit CMU .233 to .177 and outblocked the Chippewas, 14-7.

UNO took an early lead in the first set and never trailed. The Mavericks led by at least two points through the entire game and took their largest lead at 17-10 on a kill by junior middle blocker Amy Taylor. Wollak led Omaha with four kills, while O'Shaughnessy dished out six assists. UNO hit .462 and had three blocks for the set and went on to win the first set 25-18.

In the second game, the Mavs jumped out to a 9-3 advantage on attacking error by the Chippewas. Omaha led the set comfortably at 19-13 before Central Michigan rallied with four consecutive points to bring the score to 19-17. However, CMU was halted by junior middle blocker Diane Banderas, who accounted for the final four points with two kills and two blocks to help UNO to a 25-21 set victory. Banderas topped Omaha with three kills and three blocks of Omaha's five blocks in the second set.

The Mavericks and Chippewas went back and forth in the third set for much of the early part of the game. Central Michigan took control at 12-7 when it rattled off eight straight points to jump out to a 20-8 lead. The Chippewas, aided by .234 hitting as a team, took the third set 25-12.

Both teams opened the fourth set by exchanging points until Omaha took a 5-4 lead. From there, the Mavericks never looked back, with Horkey stringing together an impressive service run of eight points to make it 23-12. The Mavericks picked up a dominant 25-14 victory in the fourth set and held Central Michigan to -.069 team hitting, putting away the match 3-1 for their first win of the season.

"I like what I saw from our players today," head coach Rose Shires said. "We started out strong in the first two sets and then struggled in game three, but we worked hard to regain control. Mentally, that provided a big boost. If our team plays like this on a consistent basis, this will be a great year for us.

"Now we want to make sure we come out aggressive tomorrow. We have two tough matches ahead of us this weekend because this is a very evenly matched tournament field. We'll get pressed early, but we like the challenges that provides."

Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 30 as it hosts Drake in the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Omaha Classic. The match is slated for Noon, followed by a 6 p.m. tournament finale with UMKC. Links to live stats and live video for both matches will be available on OMavs.com.
