Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- It proved to be the second Maverick-Mastodon marathon of the year on Saturday night, as the Omaha volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 11-15) decision to Fort Wayne at Gates Sports Center. With the loss, the UNO is now 10-18 (5-10 Summit League) on the season, while IPFW improves to 13-16 (7-7 Summit League) and takes the season series against the Mavs.
Three Omaha players recorded double-doubles for the night: junior outside hitter
Kelley Wollak (15 kills, 11 digs), freshman outside hitter
Mackenzie Horkey (13 kills, 15 digs) and freshman setter
Sydney O'Shaughnessy (43 assists, 13 digs).
Junior middle blockers
Amy Taylor and
Megan Schmale led the way at the net, finishing with four blocks apiece. Schmale added 10 kills on .348 attacking, and Taylor had seven more while hitting .385.
Fort Wayne was paced by Emily Spencer's double-double on 20 kills and 12 digs, along with six blocks. Sarah Heckman added 15 kills, and Somer Johnson had another 11, while Anna Wrede finished with a match-high nine blocks.
As a team, UNO hit .210 to IPFW's .208, but the Mastodons outblocked Omaha, 13-8.
Helped by six kills from Sarah Heckman, Fort Wayne opened the match with a 25-23 win.
In the second set, the Mavericks overcame a 17-13 deficit and rallied with four straight points to tie it at 17-all. A Wollak kill made it 18-18, and two IPFW attack errors put Omaha up by two. With IPFW still pushing to tie it again, a kill from Taylor and another Mastodon error made it 22-19 and forced a Fort Wayne timeout. After trading points to bring the score to 23-22 UNO, the Mavericks put it away with a Schmale kill and a last IPFW attack error to give Omaha the 25-22 win.
Fort Wayne then took a 2-1 lead in the third game, hitting .355 en route to a 25-19 win.
The Mavs, however, evened the match at 2-2 in the fourth set. They never trailed in the game, securing an early 10-4 lead with the help of kills from Horkey, Schmale, Wollak and Taylor. Keeping a solid lead, Omaha worked out to an 18-12 advantage, punctuated with an O'Shaughnessy kill. The Mastodons managed to pull within two at 21-19, but Horkey hammered out three kills in a final 4-1 run to close out the set, 25-20.
The deciding fifth set was just as dramatic as the first four, as UNO and IPFW quickly brought the game to a 9-9 stall. The Mastodons managed to take the upper hand, though, as a closing 6-2 spurt sealed their set win, 15-11, and the match, 3-2 match.
Omaha returns to action with its final regular-season match of the year on Friday, Nov. 14, hosting Western Illinois. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse, and the Mavericks will honor seniors
