Box Score MACOMB, Ill. – The Omaha women's soccer team suffered its second one-goal conference loss on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill.
Omaha is now 5-11-2 overall and 3-2-2 in Summit League play. Western Illinois improves to 4-12-1 on the year and 3-3-1 in the conference.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Omaha got on the scoreboard early in the second half courtesy of junior defender Hannah Wampler. Following a foul by a Western Illinois defender, Wampler laced a 20-yard free kick that eluded WIU keeper Victoria Kappel in the 49th minute. The goal was the fourth of the season for Wampler.
Western Illinois tied the game up less than five minutes later. Sarah Hall converted on a penalty kick to make the score 1-1. The Leathernecks took the lead 17 minutes later when Hall scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Sarah Wright.
Omaha had a couple chances to tie the game in the final 15 minutes. Courtney Neville had a clear look at goal, but her shot was blocked by a Western Illinois defender. Minutes later, Layla Ashouri's shot hit the post.
Western Illinois held a 21-13 advantage in shots. Courtney Neville, Chelsi Rohloff, and Hannah Wampler each had three shots for Omaha. Goalkeeper Haley Shelton made ten saves in the loss.
Omaha will travel to face IUPUI on Sunday, November 2. Kick-off is set for 11:00 a.m. (CT) in Indianapolis, Ind.
