Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Omaha volleyball team finished off its weekend roadtrip on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 20-25) to South Dakota at the DakotaDome. The Mavericks are now 9-14 (4-6 Summit League) on the season, while the Coyotes are 14-9 (8-2 Summit League).
Freshman setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy registered her team-leading 12th double-double of the year, closing the day with 23 assists and 12 digs, along with three service aces and a block. The effort also marked O'Shaughnessy's third straight double-double in as many matches.
Junior outside hitter Kelley Wollak finished with a team-high nine kills, and junior middle blocker Megan Schmale had eight kills with a team-best four blocks. Junior setter/rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer matched Schmale with four blocks and also had five kills.
Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey delivered five kills with a team-leading 15 digs and two stops at the net.
South Dakota was led by Kendall Kritenbrink, who totaled 13 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Riley Haug posted 18 digs, and Brittany Jessen notched 37 assists.
As a team, Omaha hit .058 to USD's .165 and trailed the Coyotes in blocking, 10-7.
The Mavericks were challenged immediately in the opening set, as South Dakota took a 7-1 lead and never looked back. The Coyotes totaled 18 kills for the game, including five from Kritenbrink, and took a 25-22 win.
In set two, it was Omaha that held the upper hand for much of the way. The Mavericks worked out to an 11-5 lead, helped by three early Schimmer kills and a Schmale/O'Shaughnessy block. The score was pushed to 18-12 UNO with a block by Schimmer and junior middle blocker Diane Banderas, prompting a Coyote timeout. USD then came out on an 8-2 run and tied the game at 20-20. Omaha went ahead by two with a Horkey kill and a USD error, but the Coyotes tied it again at 22-all and 23-all, then took their first lead on an ace from Jessen. After UNO called a timeout, USD closed the set at 25-23 with a block by Dimke and Melissa Firtko.
South Dakota used the same momentum going into the third game, taking an 11-2 advantage. Despite six Maverick kills from Wollak, the Coyotes never relinquished their lead and hit .333 in the final set. They went on to take a 25-20 win for the 3-0 sweep.
Omaha returns to action next weekend with a two-match homestand at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks host Denver on Friday, Oct. 31, with first serve at 7 p.m., and links to live stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
