Men's Soccer Hosts Defending Conference Champs

The Omaha men's soccer team hosts the University of Denver in a Summit League match-up on Saturday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m.

The Teams

Omaha (5-4-2, 1-1-1 Summit League) won a non-conference match-up against Bradley University on Monday evening in Peoria, Ill.  Mark Moulton scored the game winner in the 106th minute to lift UNO.  The Mavericks sit in fourth place in the Summit League standings.

Denver (8-5-1, 2-0-1 Summit League) defeated Fort Wayne, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Denver, Colo.  Regan Dunk and Brian Hoyt scored for the Pioneers.  DU is the defending conference champions and sit in second place in the current standings.

Scouting the Mavericks

Omaha is in fourth place in the Summit League Standings with a 1-1-1 conference mark.  The Mavericks are 2-1-1 in their last four games.  They are 3-2 at Caniglia Field in Omaha, 2-2-1 on the road, and 0-0-1 on neutral sites.  Overall, UNO is 5-4-2 and has posted a 1-1-1 conference record.

Vance Rookwood leads the team in goals and points.  Rookwood has five goals for ten points on the season.  Mark Moulton is second on the team in points (9) and leads UNO in assists (5).  Logan Mendez has a goal and three assists on the season.  Nick Miller has added two goals from his central defender position.  Christian Garcia and Jake McCain each have two assists.

Josh Christensen and Joseph Ghitis split time in goal this season for Omaha.  Christensen has started five games and has a 3-1-1 record.  Christensen has a .850 save percentage with 17 saves and has three shut-outs.  He has allowed three goals and has a 0.55 goals against average.  Ghitis has started six games this year and owns a 2-3-1 record with two shut-outs.  Ghitis has made 15 saves and has a .652 save percentage.  He has allowed seven goals and has a 1.25 goals against average.

The Mavericks boast five individual players who have earned all-league awards this season.  Mark Moulton was named Summit League Player-of-the-Week earlier this season.  Josh Christensen, Felipe da Silva, Joseph Ghitis, and Nick Miller each have been named conference Defensive-Players-of-the-Week


As a team, Omaha has outscored their opponents by a 12-11 margin.  They also have a 46-45 advantage in corner kicks.  The Mavericks have posted four shut-outs on the season.

Scouting the Pioneers

The University of Denver is 8-5-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.  Denver is a perfect 8-0 on their home turf.  On the road, they are 0-4-1 and 0-1 on neutral sites.

Eric Kronenberg leads the team with six goals and 13 points.  The sophomore has scored all of his points coming off the bench this season.  Senior Brian Hoyt has four goals and an assist for nine points.  Kosta Kordistos and Teddy Mullin each have nine points.  Kordistos has three goals and three assists, while Mullin has four goals and an assist.

The goalkeeping duo of Oliver Brown and Ryan Massey have combined for a 1.31 goals against average and .537 save percentage.  The duo have four total shut-outs on the season.  Brown is 4-1 overall with a 0.96 goals against average.  He has a .643 save percentage and two shut-outs.  Massey is 4-4-1 overall with a 1.51 goals against average.  He has a .462 save percentage and two shut-outs.

As a team, Denver has outscored their opponents by a 24-19 margin and have only been shut-out once this season.

Series History

This is the second all-time meeting between the two programs.  Denver defeated Omaha 1-0 last year in Denver.  The Pioneers' Zach Bolden scored the game winner in the 63rd minute at CIBER Field.
