Box Score PEORIA, Ill. – Sophomore Mark Moulton's goal in the 106th minute lifted the Omaha men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Bradley University in non-conference play on Monday evening in Peoria, Ill. The victory moves Omaha to 5-4-2 on the season, while Bradley drops to 6-8 overall.
Omaha owned a 10-8 shot advantage in the opening half, but could not put a ball past Bradley goalkeeper Shay Niemeyer. The Mavericks had two chances to score in the 39th minute. Xavier Gomez took a shot that was blocked by the Braves defense. The rebound landed at the foot of Logan Mendez. Mendez's shot was off target.
The Mavericks had a chance in the final minute of regulation for the game winner. Mark Moulton lofted a corner kick into the penalty area as regulation counted down. Defender Nick Miller saw his header attempt just miss the target.
The game winner came at the 105:44 mark in the second overtime. Jordan Gealy found Mark Moulton just inside the 18 yard box. Moulton's shot was deflected in front of goal, but had enough power to find the back of the net for the winner.
The overtime win for Omaha was the first in the program's four year history. Omaha's victory snapped the 24-game unbeaten streak that Bradley had in overtime matches.
“This was a great road win for the guys,” commented head coach Jason Mims. “We traveled everyone for this match since we are on fall break. A win like this is something no one will forget.”
Omaha finished the evening with a 17-14 shot advantage. Bradley held a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks. UNO goalkeeper Josh Christensen made three saves en route to his third shut-out of the season.
Omaha will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 25, against defending Summit League champion Denver University. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
