Box Score BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha volleyball captured its second win of the weekend on Sunday, defeating South Dakota State 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16) on the road at Frost Arena. The Mavericks are now 9-12 (4-4 Summit League) on the season, while the Jackrabbits drop to 6-18 (0-8 Summit League).
Two Mavericks had double-doubles for the day, highlighted by freshman setter
Sydney O'Shaughnessy's team-leading 10th of the season on a career-high 52 assists and 10 digs. Her assist total was the most since former Maverick Emily Myers had 53 against Dallas Baptist on Oct. 1, 2011. O'Shaughnessy also had three kills and three blocks for the day.
Junior outside hitter
Kelley Wollak achieved her 10th double-double as well with 10 kills and 13 digs. She was one of four Mavericks who had double-figure kills, as junior middle blocker
Megan Schmale also had 16 kills on .414 hitting and added a team-best three blocks and a trio of service aces.
Junior setter/rightside hitter
Michaela Schimmer had another strong offensive performance for the weekend, finishing with 15 kills on .467 hitting with just one attack error. Junior middle blocker
Amy Taylor added 11 kills and hit .400 for the afternoon with three stops at the net.
Three Mavs also totaled double-figure digs, with 15 from junior libero
Kimberly Bailey, 14 from freshman outside hitter
Mackenzie Horkey and 13 from freshman defensive specialist
Marisa Moseman.
As a team, Omaha outhit SDSU, .265 to .122, and outblocked the Jacks, 7-2.
South Dakota State was led by 11 kills from Tiarra Gibson and another 10 from Wagner Larson.
The match opened with a narrow 26-24 win for SDSU. Omaha was poised to take the set at 24-20, but a 6-0 Jackrabbit run gave SDSU a 1-0 advantage. It would quickly to be the Jacks' only win of the day.
In the second set, the Mavericks used a block from Schmale and O'Shaughnessy to cap a 6-1 surge, going up 19-12. After South Dakota State rebounded for two points, UNO surged again, stringing together five kills and a block while capitalizing on a pair of SDSU errors to take a 25-17 win.
The third game was close, as an 11-11 tie was broken with a Larson kill to give SDSU a one-point lead. The Mavericks knotted it again at 12-12 and 13-13 on kills by Schimmer, and a 9-2 run pushed Omaha ahead to a 20-14 advantage. Two late kills from Taylor helped UNO clinch the set, 25-18, for a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set, Omaha faced an 8-5 deficit before scoring nine unanswered points and going up 14-8. The Mavericks then registered nine more kills, five of which came from Schmale, to make it 23-16. A Taylor/O'Shaughnessy block and a final ace from Schmale then put it away, as Omaha took the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.
