Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team pushed it to five sets against Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon, but the effort fell just short in a 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 9-15) loss at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks are now 7-12 (2-4 Summit League), while the Mastodons improve to 9-10 (3-2 Summit League).
Junior outside hitter Kelley Wollak got her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 kills and 13 digs. Junior middle blocker Megan Schmale matched Wollak with 10 kills and added seven digs and four blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Horkey just missed a double-double, totaling nine kills with 17 digs and three blocks. Junior setter/rightside hitter Michaela Schimmer also had a standout effort, notching eight kills, five digs and a team-leading six blocks.
Freshman setter Sydney O'Shaughnessy also had 26 assists with a pair of kills and seven digs, and sophomore setter Nicki Carson added a career-high 15 assists of her own. Junior middle blocker Diane Banderas finished with five kills and five blocks.
As a team, Omaha hit .082 to Fort Wayne's .170. The two teams each had 10 blocks in the match.
IPFW was led by double-doubles from Emily Spencer (21 kills, 13 digs) and Kendall Wienkes (15 kills, 14 digs). Setters Madison Spence and Mallory Slyder had 25 and 20 assists, respectively.
Fort Wayne opened the match with a 25-18 win in the first set, helped by five kills and two blocks from Wienkes.
The second game got off to an even start, as Omaha and IPFW tied at 5-5 before a Maverick timeout. UNO worked out to a 14-9 advantage punctuated by a Wollak kill, then pushed it to 18-14 on another by Horkey. Fort Wayne came back to tie it at 18-all with a kill from Somer Johnson and three Maverick errors, prompting another UNO timeout. The Mavericks came out of the timeout and went up 20-18 on an IPFW service error and a Schmale kill, and back-to-back blocks from Schimmer and Banderas made it 24-21. IPFW countered with a block of its own, but a final Mastodon service error gave Omaha the win, 25-22.
UNO went up 2-1 in the third set, aided by four kills and three blocks from Schimmer. While the Mastodons managed to keep it close, Omaha never relinquished its immediate lead. After IPFW pulled within two at 23-21, Omaha called a timeout and came out with a kill from Schimmer. Fort Wayne used a kill from Wienkes and a block from Spence to make it 24-23, but Omaha kept battling, and a Schimmer kill put it away at 25-23.
In the fourth set, IPFW limited Omaha to a .031 attack percentage and took the game at 25-17 to even the match at 2-2.
The Mastodons' offensive corps proved a challenge in the fifth and final set, as IPFW hit .435 with the help of seven kills from its main target, Spencer. Although the Mavericks sheared it to a two-point margin at 8-6, the Mastodons used a final 7-3 run to take the game, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.
