Huskers Beat Mavs in Season Opener, 187-107

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Omaha swimming & diving team opened up its 2014-15 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 187-107 to in-state foe Nebraska at the Devaney Center Natatorium. The Huskers took 13 of 16 events en route to the victory.

Sophomore Morgan Stepp, junior Natalie Renshaw and senior Jenna Folies all delievered event victories in their respective events. Renshaw took the win in the 100 free, finishing with a time of :51.88.

Stepp opened her season taking the top spots in the long distance events. She grabbed first place in the 1,000 free (10:46.95) and finished second in the 500 free (5:17.41).

Foiles won the 200 fly with a time of 2:10.32. The senior also finished second in the 100 fly, posting a time of 59.74.

Freshman Sam Starke of Coon Rapids, Minn., made her collegiate debut, finishing second in the 200 IM (2:15.84).

"We had some strong performances and saw many opportunities to coach our athletes up to the next level," head coach Todd Samland said. "It was awesome to see our team stay focused, supportive and to live up to expectations."

The Mavs return to Omaha for their home opener on Monday, Oct. 13 against Kansas. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at HPER Pool.
