Mavericks Hit the Road to Meet Mastodons

The Omaha men's basketball team (12-8, 2-3 Summit League) returns to action this Thursday, Jan. 30, visiting Fort Wayne. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind., and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com. KOZN 1620 AM will carry the game live with Gary Sharp on the call, and fans can stream the radio broadcast on their smartphones by downloading NRG Media's app “1620 The Zone.”

Scouting the Fort Wayne Mastodons
Fort Wayne enters the week with a record of 16-6 (4-1 Summit League) after picking up a 90-75 win on on Jan. 25 over IUPUI. Pierre Bland narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, also adding three steals with just one turnover. On Monday, Bland was named Summit League Co-Player of the Week with North Dakota State's Taylor Braun.

Four Mastodons have averaged double-figure scoring, led by 15.1 points per game from Luis Jacobo and rounded out by Steve Forbes (11.9 ppg), Mo Evans (10.3 ppg) and Bland (10.1 ppg). Additionally, Joe Reed paces IPFW on the glass with 5.5 rebounds per game. Fort Wayne is led by head coach Tony Jasick, who holds a record of 43-42 over three seasons.

IPFW leads the all-time series with Omaha, 3-1. The two teams last squared off on Jan. 1, 2013, with the Mavericks earning an 86-79 win at Ralston Arena.

•Kenpom.com lists Omaha's adjusted tempo of 74.4 possessions per 40 minutes at fifth nationally.
•According to RPIRatings.com, UNO's RPI is 134th nationally through games of Jan. 26, the second highest of any Summit League team.
•The Mavericks' average scoring margin of 6.4 points is 91st in the country. UNO's wins have come with an average margin of victory of 17.3 points, while their losses have come with an average of 9.9.
•UNO is 8-1 this season when scoring 80 or more points in a game.
•Omaha finished with a season-high .556 shooting percentage in its win at South Dakota State on Jan. 18. In the last two years, Omaha is 11-5 when shooting .500 or better as a team.
•Senior guard Justin Simmons has 12 career scoring performances with 20 or more points. Senior center John Karhoff is just behind him with eight, and junior guard CJ Cater has six.
•Omaha tallied its 12th win of the season on Jan. 25, defeating South Dakota at home, 77-73. The victory pushed UNO over its 2012-13 wins total (11) and marks the Mavericks' highest wins total since going Division I.
•The Mavericks' five-game win streak from Nov. 25 to Dec. 14 was their longest stretch since beginning the Division I transition, and it was the UNO's longest since the 2010-11 season.
•Omaha received votes in the CollegeInsider.com mid-major poll for five straight weeks from Dec. 16 to Jan. 13. This year marks the Mavericks' inclusion for the first time in school history.
•Over 2012-13 and 2013-14, Omaha is 13-5 when junior guard CJ Carter scores 15 or more points in a game. Carter led the Mavericks in three straight games to open the year with 18 points at Northern Illinois, 22 at Iowa and 22 vs. UMKC.

Last Time Out: vs. South Dakota (Jan. 25)
Omaha used a second-half surge to defeat conference leader South Dakota on Saturday afternoon, 77-73, at Ralston Arena. UNO was paced by junior guard CJ Carter, who led all scorers with 18 points, including three second-half 3-pointers. Carter also added a game-high five assists.

Three other Mavericks tallied double digits on the afternoon: senior guard Justin Simmons (16), sophomore Marcus Tyus (12) and junior forward Mike Rostampour (10). Rostampour finished a rebound shy from grabbing a double-double.

UNO shot 46 percent (26-of-57) for the day, improving from 33 percent in the first half to 59 percent in the second. USD finished with a 47 percent (23-of-49) effort from the floor and just 20 percent (3-of-15) from 3-point range.

Mavericks Making Headway Nationally
UNO has made its presence known in the national statistical rankings, as the Mavericks' .775 free throw percentage ranks fourth nationally. Omaha is also 22nd in points per game (81.2) and 23rd in assists per game (15.9) as a team.

Individually, senior center John Karhoff's .875 free throw shooting percentage has him ranked 38th among Division I players, and senior guard Alex Phillips is 54th with a .462 3-point shooting percentage.

Rostampour Makes His Mark
Junior forward Mike Rostampour has started all 20 games this season after redshirting in 2012-13, and the transfer from St. Cloud State has averaged 7.3 points and a team-leading 6.1 rebounds per game. Over 20 contests, Omaha is 6-1 when Rostampour pulls down eight or more rebounds in a game. Rostampour's season best of 11 boards came in a 77-73 loss at Hawaii in the final minute.

Karhoff Continues Climb Up Career Charts
With his 13-point effort at South Carolina State on Nov. 25, senior John Karhoff's became the 34th Maverick to join the Mavericks' 1,000 Point Club. The Creighton Prep product has now amassed 1,199 career points over three-plus years, which ranks 13th in school history.

Karhoff has also joined the career leaders list in field goals made and blocks, and he is on the brink of entering the top 20 in rebounds and steals. Karhoff's current totals and progress climbing the career ranks is listed below:
