Cedar Falls, Iowa – The Omaha swimming and diving team fell shy of Northern Iowa, 153-128, in their final road meet of the regular season.
Freshman Morgan Stepp, who ended with three first-place swims, took the first individual win for UNO in the 1000-yard free, clinching nine points in first place (10:46.74). Junior Lexi Bergeron took third place for three points in the same race (11:06.88). Stepp and Bergeron had repeat top-finishes in the 500-yard free with Stepp finishing in first (5:17.35) and Bergeron in second (5:21.47). Stepp, a Parker, Colo., native rounded out her competition with a solid finish in the 200-yard IM (2:12.23). Seniors Madeline Hutt and Hannah Alexander followed in second and third place.
Sophomore Natalie Renshaw was the only swimmer to break the one-minute mark in the 100-yard back. The Millard North graduate clocked 59.22 for first place. Freshman Haley Duncan and junior Victoria Schab finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Renshaw later added an additional first-place finish in the 100-yard free with a time of 52.54.
Hutt and Alexander swam their signature breaststroke races together. Hutt grabbed first place in the 100-yard race (1:05.65) and Alexander landed in third (1:08.17). In the 200-yard race, Hutt again took first with a time of 2:18.57. Alexander followed in second (2:25.27). Hutt's race was her fastest this season and set a new pool record at Capitol Federal Natatorium.
Senior Whitney Korgan posted a second-place finish in the 50-yard free (25.35). While freshman MacKenzie Ritter took sixth (26.16).
“I am extremely impressed with the competitiveness of our team,” said head coach Todd Samland.
“Hats off to Maddie Hutt for her performances tonight.”
The Mavericks will finish their regular season Saturday in a home meet against Nebraska-Kearney at 2 p.m. Five UNO seniors will be honored.
