Box Score 2 HAMMOND, La. – Behind two double-doubles from sophomore
Michaela Schimmer, the Omaha volleyball team split its matches on the opening day of the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic on Friday. The Mavericks defeated Louisiana Tech 3-2 (15-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 15-12) before falling to host Southeastern Louisiana 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25). UNO is now 2-6 (0-0 Summit League) on the season.
Schimmer had a double-double in both matches, bringing her to a team-leading five double-doubles for the season. Sophomore
Kelley Wollak topped UNO in kills with 10 against Louisiana Tech and 11 against Southeastern Louisiana, and sophomore
Diane Banderas hit .565 for the day with a combined 16 kills and five blocks. Sophomore
Megan Schmale added 15 kills and 12 blocks between the two matches.
MATCH 1 – OMAHA 3, LOUISIANA TECH 2Omaha rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first match of the day to take a 3-2 win over Louisiana Tech.
Schimmer snagged her first double-double of the day on 10 kills and 12 assists, hitting .316 and adding five digs and four blocks. Wollak added another 10 kills, and Schmale chipped in eight kills with a match-leading seven stops at the net.
Sophomore
Bailey Baxter had 19 assists in the match, and sophomore
Kimberly Bailey posted 17 digs. As a team, UNO outblocked the Lady Techsters 13-6.
Louisiana Tech was led by 19 kills from Rebecca Redgen and 37 assists by Maria Coelho.
MATCH 2 – SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA 3, OMAHA 1In the Mavericks' second match of the day, a 3-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana, Schimmer tallied her second double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs. Wollak paced Omaha again with 11 kills, and Banderas chipped in a season-high eight kills on .500 hitting. Baxter added 16 assists for the night.
Schmale finished with seven kills and five blocks, while sophomore
Amy Taylor totaled five blocks of her own. Omaha outblocked its opponent again, finishing with 7.5 blocks to Southeastern Louisiana's four.
Southeastern Louisiana's attack presented a challenge for the Mavericks, as Tiffany Thomas led SELU with 23 kills on .405 hitting. Rachael Bunn had 12 kills and hit .308, and Elizabeth Ramee had another 10. Setter Mikayla Shippy guided the Lions' offense to a .259 attack percentage with 54 assists.
Omaha resumes play on Saturday for the final day of the Lion Classic, facing Stetson at 9 a.m. and Southern at 3 p.m. in Hammond, La. Links to live stats and live video will be available on OMavs.com.
