Mastodons Outlast Mavericks in 3-1 Loss

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha volleyball team battled hard but was unable to come away with a win on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1 to Fort Wayne by set scores of 18-25, 26-28, 25-19, 19-25 at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks move to 6-19 (1-9 Summit League), while the Mastodons improve to 14-13 (6-5 Summit League).

Three Mavericks finished with double-figure kill efforts, led by 14 kills on .400 hitting from sophomore Megan Schmale. The Murdock, Neb., native added a match-best eight blocks.

Sophomore Diane Banderas hit .650 with a career-high 13 kills and no errors and chipped in three blocks. Sophomore Kelley Wollak notched 11 kills and 13 digs for a double-double, and sophomore Bailey Baxter had a double-double of her own with 22 assists and 14 digs.

Sophomore Michaela Schimmer chipped in 16 assists, seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. Freshman Kristy Wieser and sophomore Amy Taylor had four blocks apiece.

Fort Wayne was led by a double-double from Emily Spencer, who had 17 kills and 16 digs for the day. Hailie Ripley added 14 kills on .619 hitting, and Madison Spence finished with 43 assists and seven digs. Jen Milligan led the Mastodons with 17 digs, and Sarah Heckman posted four blocks for the afternoon.

As a team, Omaha outblocked Fort Wayne 11-7, marking the Mavericks' seventh double-figure team blocks total of the season. UNO also outhit IPFW, .203 to .184.

IPFW took the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 28-26 before Omaha came back for a win in the third game. Helped by five kills from Schmale and another three from Wollak, the Mavericks hit .212 as a team and held IPFW to a .000 attack percentage. Down 15-14 in the middle of the set, UNO rattled off six straight points to take a 20-15 lead. Back-to-back Schmale kills made it 22-16, and another later stretched it to 24-18. IPFW managed one more score, but a final Mastodon service error gave Omaha the set at 25-19. Fort Wayne came back in the fourth game though, taking the set 25-19 and the match at 3-1.

Omaha returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8, traveling to South Dakota State. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
