Mavericks Fall 88-80 at Drake

Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – The Omaha men's basketball team threatened late but could not come away with a road win at Drake on Saturday, falling 88-80 at the Knapp Center. The Mavericks are now 3-3 (0-0 Summit League), while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1 (0-0 MVC).

Four Mavericks finished with double-figure scoring efforts, led by 17 points apiece from junior guard CJ Carter and sophomore guard Devin Patterson. Sophomore Marcus Tyus added 16, and senior center John Karhoff had 12.

Senior forward Matt Hagerbaumer narrowly missed his first double-double, tallying nine points, a career-high 13 rebounds, a career-best four blocks, three assists and a steal.

Drake was paced by a double-double from Richard Carter, who had 23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Aaron Hawley added 14 points, and Seth VanDeest and Gary Ricks each had 13. Chris Caird rounded out the day with 12 points.

As a team, UNO shot 44 percent (27-of-61) with 11 3-pointers, while DU came in at a 49 percent (31-of-63) clip with nine treys. The Bulldogs won the battle on the glass, 37-36, and committed nine turnovers while forcing 17 Maverick miscues. For its, part, Omaha outblocked Drake, 5-0, spurred by Hagerbaumer's four stops.

With the help of three early 3-pointers, the Mavericks stormed out to a 16-9 lead by the first media timeout. A triple from senior guard Caleb Steffensmeier then spotted UNO a 22-15 advantage, but Drake pulled within one at 10:36 on Trevor Berkeley's scores on back-to-back possessions.

The Mavericks surged again to 27-21 with a three from redshirt freshman guard Jalen Bradley, but DU's leading scorer, Carter, tied it up at 30-30. CJ Carter responded immediately with a layup, followed by a trey from Hawley to trade the in Drake's favor at 33-32. Carter and Tyus came back with threes to push UNO ahead 40-35, but Caird hit a 3-pointer of his own to knot it again at 40-40. After a Karhoff jumper and VanDeest's final layup, the score sat 42-42 at the break.

It was all Drake to start the second half, as the Bulldogs put together a 7-0 run with layups from Richard Carter and a 3-pointer from Hawley. Tyus broke up the run with a layup, and two Karhoff free throws pulled Omaha within three at 49-46. After DU went up by five, UNO chipped away at the margin with a dunk from Hagerbaumer and a Karhoff jumper that cut it to 53-52. After a three-minute stretch in which neither team scored, the Mavs regained the lead, 54-53, on an offensive board and ensuing layup from Hagerbaumer. Drake went ahead once more, but Phillips knocked down a 3-pointer to keep it to a one-point game at 60-59.

The Bulldogs tallied back-to-back threes from Richard Carter and Caird to go up 66-59, and the Mavericks came back with one from CJ Carter. A Hagerbaumer dunk sheared the score to 66-64, but Ricks poured in another shot from beyond the arc to make it a five-point margin. Patterson's layup with 4:33 to go brought it to 69-66, and after a pair of foul shots by Richard Carter, a Tyus trey made it 75-71. It was the last time Omaha threatened, however, as Drake used the final two minutes to take much as a nine-point lead before securing the 88-80 win.
