Five Mavericks Earn All-Summit League Honors

OMAHA, Neb. - Junior center back Felipe da Silva was named to the All-Summit League First Team, and freshman forward Christian Garcia was named Newcomer of the Year to lead the list of five Mavericks honored in the league's postseason awards on Thursday.

In addition to his Newcomer of the Year honor, Garcia was also named to the All-League Second Team, as was sophomore midfielder Chava Garcia.

Christian Garcia, Sam Langston and Mark Moulton were all selected to the All-Newcomer Team.

The awards were voted on by the league's head coaches.

Da Silva, a second-team pick last season, started every game at center back and played more minutes than any Maverick field player. He was named Defensive Player of the Week twice this season and had one assist. With da Silva leading the back line, the Mavs posted a 0.83 goals against average in six conference games to rank second in the league. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native is the first UNO men's soccer player to ever earn first-team all-conference honors.

The Mavs' top two scorers, Christian Garcia and Chava Garcia, were named to the second team. Chava, an Omaha South grad, had a team-high 11 points on three goals and five assists this season. Christian, an El Paso, Texas native, finished with four goals and two assists for 10 points. He had eight points in Summit League play (3g, 2a) to rank second in the league among all players and first among all newcomers.

Langston, a Sammamish, Wash., native, made 11 starts at left back as a freshman and had two assists to earn an All-Newcomer Team selection. He helped solidify the Maverick defense in conference play to allow just five goals in six league games. Moulton, a Creighton Prep product, had two goals and two assists for six points in his first season at UNO. Five of his six points came in conference games.

Regular-season champion Denver dominated the awards, claiming eight of the 11 first-team spots, as well as Offensive Player of the Year (Zach Bolden), Defensive Player of the Year (Theodor Remman), Goalkeeper of the Year (Oliver Brown) and Coach of the Year (Bobby Muuss). The Mavs' Christian Garcia was the only non-Denver player to earn one of the men's or women's soccer major awards.
