Brookings, S.D. – The Omaha swimming & diving team opened the 2013-14 season on Sunday, falling to South Dakota State, 183-117.
Sophomore Natalie Renshaw took the Mavs' first top finish in the 100-yard backstroke (57.98) and was the only swimmer to go under one minute. Renshaw later closed a four-event run for Omaha, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.13). In total, the sophomore had four top finishes for UNO, including first-place swims in the 100-yard freestyle and as the third leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Senior Madeline Hutt followed Renshaw's win with a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:05.38. Freshmen Jamie Dhabalt and Jeni Fendrick placed fifth and sixth in the same race, respectively (1:11.22, 1:14.11).
Junior Jenna Foiles continued Omaha's run, taking first place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.79). Senior Hannah Alexander finished in fourth (2:19.21). Alexander also took second place in the 200-yard IM (2:14.92) after being out touched in each leg of the race by the Jackrabbits' Emily Campbell (2:12.42).
The 200-yard freestyle relay team took first in the last event of the day (1:38.55). The team was made up of Foiles, senior Erin Wright, Renshaw and senior Whitney Korgan.
Freshman Gabi McNeilly, in her UNO diving debut, took fourth in 1-meter (177.75) and fifth in 3-meter (158.47). Sophomore Miranda Knipfer placed second in 3-meter (228.90) and fifth in 1-meter (159.98).
UNO is 0-1 in Summit League competition. The Mavs will remain on the road for their next meet at Air Force on Friday, Oct. 18. The team's home opener will be on Saturday, Oct. 26 against Illinois State at 2 p.m.
