OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha women's soccer team fought its way to a 1-0 victory over Fort Wayne in the Summit League opener Friday at the UNO Soccer Field, the first win of the season for the Mavericks.
After an 0-10 record in non-conference play, it only took the Mavs one game to win in The Summit League, knocking off the Mastodons (4-6, 0-1). The Mavs (1-10, 1-0) now share the lead in The Summit League standings.
Senior forward
Danielle Archuleta got things off on the right foot, scoring in the ninth minute for the Mavericks' first lead of the season. Archuleta recorded her fourth goal of the season after taking a ball from
Anna Sibson down the left side of the box, beating a defender and placing a shot past goalie Sam Pavlika, the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week. The goal came at 8:26.
Playing energized soccer with the 1-0 lead, the Mavs nearly doubled the lead later in the first half when Archuleta slipped past the goalie on a break, but her odd-angled shot went wide of the far post.
The Mavs withstood some pressure from the Mastodons in the second half.
Meaghan Clark made four saves to earn her first career shutout. The Mavs finished with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, while IPFW held a 12-9 shots advantage overall.
The Maverick back line of
Morgan Westenburg,
Kerry Pivovar,
Jordyn Braun and
Jenna Summers was a brick wall throughout the game, winning balls out of the air and limiting Fort Wayne's quality chances.
The Mavericks host Oakland on Sunday at Noon at the UNO Soccer Field. Oakland won The Summit League Tournament last season.
