OMAHA, Neb. - Former Creighton All-American goalkeeper
Brian Holt will join the UNO men's soccer team as a goalkeeper coach for the 2012 season.
Holt will join the Mavericks in late August following the conclusion of his professional playing season with United Soccer League's Harrisburg City Islanders.
Holt was an NSCAA First-Team All-American goalie at Creighton in 2011, helping the Bluejays reach the NCAA College Cup final four teams, where he was named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team.
He set an NCAA record with his 0.207 goals against average and was named MVC Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the NCAA with a 92.3 save percentage and 17 shutouts. Holt finished his career with an NCAA-record 44 shutouts. His 0.62 career GAA stands as a school and Missouri Valley Conference record.
"Brian is truly a remarkable story," Head Coach
Jason Mims said. "This was a kid whom not many people believed in and who was passed up by basically every college in the country. And then he went on to become a four-year starter, a First-Team All-American, and he shattered school, conference and NCAA records while earning a finance degree with honors. Brian defines the word student-athlete. I was fortunate enough to have coached Brian for close to 10 years through club soccer and in college. Brian fits right into what we are building here at UNO and will be a valuable asset to our staff, players, school and the community."
The Omaha, Neb., native won the Lowe's Senior Class Award and also was named CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year as the top Division I Men's Soccer Academic All-American. He was also a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, awarded annually to the top college soccer player in the nation.
Holt was named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in 2008 before receiving All-MVC Second-Team honors during his sophomore and junior seasons. He won three MVC Defensive Player of the Week awards and one College Soccer News National Player of the Week award in his career.
Following his Creighton career, Holt signed with the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer League. The City Islanders advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this June.
"I am looking forward to the opportunity of getting involved with the UNO men's soccer team," Holt said. "UNO is a great institution with tremendous academics and community support, as well as an up and coming soccer program.
Jason Mims is an excellent coach with so much experience and passion toward the game, and I'm excited to help the soccer program excel."
