BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Omaha volleyball team opened a weekend road swing Friday night, falling 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 10-25, 16-25) to South Dakota State at Frost Arena. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 6-14 (1-7 Summit League), while the Jackrabbits improve to 13-8 (5-4 Summit League).
Redshirt freshman
Valerie Hecht had a career-best attacking performance, finishing with 11 kills on .375 hitting with a pair of blocks. Senior
Amy Roberts also had a career effort with 31 digs, as well as three service aces, and redshirt freshman
Bailey Baxter tallied her sixth double-double of the year off 22 assists and 12 digs.
Freshman
Kelley Wollak added eight kills and seven digs, while senior
Natalie Ebke had seven kills and 10 digs for the night. In addition, freshman
Megan Schmale totaled six kills and a team-leading three blocks, and freshman
Michaela Schimmer posted five kills and two stops.
South Dakota State was helped by Kelly Herrmann's double-double on 10 kills and 11 digs, while Kelli Fiegen totaled a team-best 15 kills on .560 hitting. Kaitlin Klingemann also finished in double figures with 11 kills, as well as a match-best four blocks.
As a team, SDSU hit .225 to UNO's .087, though the Mavericks recorded eight aces to the Jackrabbits' two.
Omaha took the first set by a score of 25-17, hitting a solid .243 with just two errors to SDSU's .043. South Dakota State, however, rallied with three straight wins by set scores of 25-21, 25-10 and 25-16 to take the match by a final tally of 3-1.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, traveling to North Dakota State. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start at Bentson Bunker Field House in Fargo, N.D., and links to live stats and live video will be available on OMavs.com.
