PEORIA Ill. – The UNO women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 loss (13-25, 20-25, 23-25) in a rematch with Bradley at the CEFCU Classic at Renaissance Coliseum on Saturday morning. With the defeat, the Mavericks fall to 0-3 on the year, while BU improves to 2-0.
Senior libero Angie Reicks finished with 11 digs on the day, which moved her up to fourth all-time in school history for career digs, as she now has 1,525 in three-plus seasons.
Offensively, Nebraska Omaha was led by senior middle blocker Brittany Hanssen's seven kills, on .375 hitting, along with six kills apiece from junior outside hitter Natalie Ebke and sophomore rightside hitter Ali Jansen.
Bradley was paced for the second straight day by 11 kills from Alise Tupuritis. Setter Madison Kamp's 29 assists helped the Braves to a .275 team attack percentage to UNO's .138.
Both teams played right with each other, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead early in game one. A kill by BU's Madelyn Ervin pushed the Braves to a four-point run that made it 15-11, and the charge was halted by a UNO timeout and a kill from Ebke. With BU ahead 19-12, UNO put up one more score, but the Braves followed by six straight unanswered points to take the set at 25-13. For the first game, Bradley hit .417 as a team and committed just two attack errors.
In the second game, UNO and BU sat tied at 8-8 before Bradley put down four consecutive points to go up 12-8. After the Mavs took a timeout, Mach came back with a kill to stop the run. The Braves then went up 15-10, but a kill by Jansen and two straight from Hanssen put the Mavs back in the game and forced a BU timeout. A block from Fleege and Hanssen helped cut it to 16-15, but the Braves took it out to 23-17 and eventually grabbed the win at 25-20.
Bradley went up 5-1 in game three before a kill from Jansen. The Braves later led 15-8, sparking the Mavs to bring it within one at 15-14. The game then tied at 19-all, but Bradley fired off three straight scores to make it 22-19. Ahead 23-20, the Braves appeared poised to take the win, but UNO battled back to 24-23 on a kill by Fleege. The Mavs' comeback was cut short, however, as Bradley put down a final kill from Courtney Keefe to finish the third set at 25-23 and earn the sweep.
“I was displeased with how we started in the first game, but I was proud of how we finished the match today,” Head Coach Rose Shires said. “We need to allow ourselves to be athletes and just play, and that will be key as we move on to our tournaments in the coming weeks.”
UNO returns action Sept. 2-3 at Sapp Fieldhouse, hosting the annual UNO Showcase in its home debut. On Friday, the Mavs will face Winona State at 12:30 p.m. and Minnesota State Moorhead at 6:30 p.m.
