OMAHA, Neb. - UNO student-athletes' achievements in the classroom ran side-by-side with their long list of achievements in competition during 2010-11 season. As a group, the Mavericks finished the year with a combined grade point average of 3.18 and earned numerous academic awards along the way.
The Dean's List was thoroughly populated by UNO student-athletes during the 2010-11 year. One Hundred-Twenty Mavericks made the Dean's list (3.5 GPA or better) in the fall and another 136 made the same list in the spring. Additionally, 28 earned Chancellor's List honors in the fall (4.0 GPA) while 26 made the list in the spring.
The UNO volleyball team continues to lead all Maverick teams in academic achievement. The Mavs posted a team GPA of 3.68 in 2010-11, earning GPAs of better than 3.6 each semester. Twelve players, a full 80 percent of the roster, were on the Dean's List in the spring.
The UNO hockey team had the highest cumulative GPA of UNO's men's team, posting a team GPA of 3.22. The Mavs had a particularly strong spring semester with a team GPA of 3.52. Sixteen players made the Dean's List while three made the Chancellor's List.
Hockey players Eric Olimb, Nick Von Bokern and Fredrik Bergman were all named WCHA Scholar Athletes, part of a string of of academic awards for UNO student-athletes.
Among the other individual honors, track and Field's Anja Puc was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 first team, and baseball's Tyler Splichal was named to the Academic All-Region 7 third team. As part of the Chancellor's Student Honors Convocation, golf's Dani Suponchick earned the UNO women's Scholar-Athlete Award while football's Mike Higgins earned the same award for the men.
In additon, 197 UNO student-athletes, the same number as the previous year, will earn one of three academic awards from the MIAA when the conference releases the awards list later this month. All of those student-athletes have earned a GPA of 3.0 or better which puts almost 53 percent of UNO's total student-athlete roster on the list.
