Omaha Athletics welcomes first dedicated sport scientists and new support unit

OMAHA, Neb. (July 18, 2025) – Omaha Athletics, in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha's School of Health and Kinesiology and Department of Biomechanics, announced the addition of a sports science unit within its industry-leading sports performance operation Friday.

Billy Lozowski, PhD has joined the Mavericks as the department's first-ever sport scientist.

Omaha's sports science unit will work with the Mavericks' varsity athletic programs through research, data analysis and performance optimization. This office will focus on integrating data from various sources, developing tools and reports and applying evidence-based strategies to enhance Maverick student-athletes' athletic performance and injury risk mitigation.

"UNO continues to solidify its status as an innovative leader nationally in holistic student-athlete support and today's announcement of our new sports science operation continues our rise," said Vice Chancellor / Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell. "Thanks to the generous support of donors and our partnerships with the School of Health and Kinesiology and Department of Biomechanics, we are able to form this new unit to drive research, while further enhancing performance by providing cutting-edge support to our Maverick sport programs."

Dowell continued, "We look forward to this extension of our collaboration with campus partners and integrating Billy [Lozowski] as the leader of the sports science unit as part of our robust sports performance vertical, which has powered the Mavericks' unprecedented success over the past few years."

Led by Senior Associate Athletic Director – Athletic Performance Dr. Taryn Ninemire, Omaha's holistic athletic performance unit now consists of sports medicine, mental health, sports nutrition, physical therapy, athletic training, strength and performance and sports science.

Over the last four fiscal years, the vertical has taken its current form as an industry leader in innovative holistic student-athlete support with a comprehensive medical and team physician partnership with OrthoNebraska, establishment and integration of sport psychology, mental health and sports nutrition support operations and a nutritional training table program for all female student-athletes and sport programs.

In addition to the sports science partnership, Omaha Athletics and the School of Health and Kinesiology and Department of Biomechanics collaborated on an Athletic Training Ph.D. Sports Science Fellowship, which is ongoing.

"We are excited to welcome Billy to our athletic performance team as our first sport scientist," said Ninemire. "His expertise will strengthen our ability to use evidence-based decision making to elevate student-athlete performance and health. A big thank you to our partners in Biomechanics and Health and Kinesiology for their continued support and collaboration."

"We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Billy Lozowski to our team," said Dr. Sam Wilkins, assistant professor and clinical education coordinator for the Athletic Training Program in the School of Health and Kinesiology. "Billy brings a deep well of knowledge and experience from his impactful work at Auburn University. His addition marks an exciting step forward in strengthening the collaboration between the UNO Sports Medicine and Biomechanics Laboratory and Omaha Athletics. We're confident Billy will play a key role in advancing our research, innovation and performance initiatives across the board."

Lozowski joins Omaha after completing his Doctor of Philosophy at Auburn. A renowned sport science researcher and practitioner, Lozowski has nearly a decade in high-level research experience with England Cricket, the Surrey County Cricket Club, the Middlesex County Cricket Club and Auburn (NCAA Division I – SEC) baseball and softball.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in sport science from St. Mary's University in Twickenham, England. Lozowski also earned a Master of Research from St. Mary's in sports biomechanics.

"I'm delighted to be joining this innovative partnership," said Lozowski. "The opportunity to leverage UNO's renowned sport science capabilities to enhance an outstanding athletic program is truly exciting. I believe this collaboration will equip Mavericks for tremendous success and growth and I am deeply grateful to the many individuals who made this opportunity possible. I look forward to working alongside the likes of Taryn Ninemire, Sam Wilkins, Adam Rosen and Brian Knarr to take this program next-level."

An internationally published researcher, Lozowski has served as a reviewer for the International Journal of Sports Medicine for the past two years and has taught several undergraduate and graduate-level courses covering sport biomechanics, sport technique and movement analysis and wellness and public health.

Lozowski is an active member of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sport.
