OMAHA, Neb. – Five UNO baseball players earned all-conference recognition from the MIAA, the league office announced Thursday. Senior
Jed Hanson and juniors
Brady Hohl and
Joe Holtmeyer highlighted the Maverick contingent, as the trio was named to the All-MIAA First Team. In addition, freshman
Caleb Palensky was selected as MIAA Freshman of the Year, and he and senior
Ben Brown both also garnered all-conference honorable mention status.
Holtmeyer, a returning first-team All-American and the 2010 Division II strikeout leader, has compiled a record of 7-2 and a 5.01 ERA in his junior season. A product of Creighton Prep, he has thrown a team-high 64.2 innings and fanned 87 batters this year to lead the MIAA. Holtmeyer has thrown four complete games and has four performances in double-figure strikeouts. With 12 strikeouts at nationally-ranked Emporia State last month, Holtmeyer became UNO's all-time career strikeouts leader. Entering the MIAA Tournament, he now has 316 over three seasons.
Hohl, who was second-team All-MIAA a year ago, has had an outstanding junior season, batting .400 and starting all 50 games at shortstop and third base. The Millard North product leads the Mavericks in hits (74) and runs scored (53) and is second in RBI (34) and doubles (11). Hohl also has five home runs and has drawn a team-best 23 walks as UNO's leadoff hitter while also stealing a team-high 12 stolen bases.
Hanson, a native of Forest Lake, Minn., has started all 50 games and has belted a team-leading eight home runs. He has a .349 batting average and leads UNO with 43 RBI, as well as 43 runs scored, which ranks second on the squad. Hanson is 9-for-13 in stolen base attempts and also has 21 walks and 10 doubles, behind only Hohl in all three categories.
Palensky, a true freshman out of Papillion-LaVista South, came on strong in his inaugural campaign, hitting .368 with 10 doubles, two triples, a pair of home runs, 30 runs scored and 25 runs driven in. He has started 42 of the 45 games he has appeared in and has also drawn 17 walks. He gives Nebraska Omaha its second straight MIAA Freshman of the Year, as sophomore
Tyler Splichal earned the same award in 2010.
Brown, a product of Millard West, transferred to UNO for his senior year after beginning his career at Iowa Western and Campbell University. He has compiled a record of 6-1 with a 5.60 ERA over 11 appearances, striking out 38 batters with just 15 walks over 62.2 innings pitched. Brown ranks second on the team in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts.
UNO now has 15 All-MIAA selections and 73 total all-conference awards in program history, including its years as members of the MIAA and the North Central Conference.
The Mavericks face Washburn in the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, May 12. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.
