FARGO, N.D. – The UNO men's basketball team dropped a loss North Dakota State on Tuesday night, falling 98-65 at Bison Sports Arena. The Mavericks are now 1-4 on the year, while NDSU improves to an undefeated 5-0.
Senior guard
Mitch Albers finished with 11 points for the night, which tied him with former Maverick Seth Nelson for sixth in career scoring at UNO. Nelson had 1,363 points from 1999 to 2003.
Sophomore center
John Karhoff led the way in scoring with 14 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. He added three assists and a trio of rebounds.
Junior forward
Alex Welhouse pulled down a team-leading six rebounds and chipped in a pair of assists, and freshman guard
CJ Carter had nine points. Freshman guard
Mitchell Farr had a strong effort off the bench, finishing with eight points, while sophomore forward
Matt Hagerbaumer tied his career best with five boards.
As a team, Nebraska Omaha shot 37.3 percent from the field, while the Bison had a 51.4 percent performance from the floor. NDSU was 13-for-25 from 3-point range for the night.
North Dakota State was paced by seven players with double-figure scoring: Lawrence Alexander (16), Jordan Aaberg (12), TrayVonn Wright (11), Mike Felt (11), Drew Lundberg (11), Taylor Braun (10) and Marshall Bjorklund (10). Wright and Aaberg pulled down nine rebounds apiece.
Wright opened the game with a dunk for the first score of the game, but Karhoff drew a foul and dropped in both free throws to make it 2-2. A 3-pointer by Welhouse put the Mavs ahead at 8-7, but it was UNO's final lead of the game, as the NDSU scoring contingent took over to shoot 52.6 percent for the half.
Down 15-9, Carter drained a three before the Bison took a 19-11 advantage on eight points by Felt by the timeout. Freeman then worked inside for a layup to break the Mavs' silence, but North Dakota State scored two quick baskets to go up 24-13.
Wright doubled the margin with a jumper to make it 31-15, and Farr later came up with a deep three that cut it to 37-18. Carter got the Mavericks up to 20 points, but NDSU came right back with a trey at 45-20. After a layup from Ring, NDSU's Braun punctuated the half with a final offensive rebound and ensuing dunk to push it to 51-25.
In the second half, the Bison leaned on Lundberg's 11 points, helped by a 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc. As a team, NDSU had seven 3-pointers for the half. The Mavericks looked to Karhoff, who added 10 second-half points.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 26, hosting Chadron State. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
