Final Stats
DENVER, Colo. - The UNO Maverick women's basketball team came up just short against Division II No. 7 Metro State on Saturday night, falling 64-61 in their final game at the Metro State Classic at Auraria Event Center.
Trailing 62-61, UNO gained possession of the basketball with 31 seconds left, and
Jamie Nash took the final shot for the Mavericks with seven seconds left, but it didn't fall. The Roadrunners grabbed the rebound, and UNO fouled Caley Dow with 1.7 seconds left. Dow sank two free throws for a 64-61 lead. Metro State then fouled the Mavs'
Amanda Woodring with 1.1 seconds left before the Mavs could attempt a game-tying 3-pointer. Woodring missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and time expired on the rebound.
The loss dropped the Mavericks to 1-1 on the season, while the Roadrunners improved to 2-0.
Nash had a game-high 22 points, to go along with a team-best eight assists and seven rebounds.
Paige Frauendorfer continued her hot shooting to start the year, adding 19 points on 6-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Frauendorfer also had a team-high five steals.
UNO's largest lead of the game came early in the first half when it was 7-4, but the Mavs never fell behind by more than eight. That came with 15:29 left when UNO trailed 43-35. But UNO went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 54-54 with 7:35 left.
After Metro State reclaimed a 60-56 lead, a 3-pointer by
Heather Pohl cut the lead back to one at 60-59 with three minutes left. Jasmine Cervantes then scored in the paint to push the Metro State lead back to three, 62-59. Nash hit a jump shot on the next Maverick possession with 1:38 to play to cut the lead to 62-61. The Mavs made a couple of key defensive stops, including a Frauendorfer steal with 31 seconds left to give UNO the ball back with a chance for the go-ahead basket.
Pohl finished with eight points for the Mavericks. Freshman
Cathleen Cox came off the bench and scored seven points on 3-of-5 shooting. UNO was outrebounded 49-33, but the Mavs made 10 steals to just two for the Roadrunners. Metro State went 30-3 last year and lost in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
UNO plays its home opener on Tuesday night against Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
