CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The UNO swimming & diving team posted four first-place finishes, but it was not enough to defeat Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon. The Mavs finished with 119.5 points to the Panthers' score of 176.5.
The Mavericks' first win came from freshman Christen Young in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.08. Freshman Jenna Foiles notched with a time of 2:12.76 in the 200-yard backstroke for a first-place finish, and sophomore Madeline Hutt clocked a time of 2:24.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke for another top showing.
UNO grabbed the top two spots in the 200 individual medley, as freshman Lexi Bergeron (2:13.60) edged teammate Kylie Rathbone (2:14.15).
Freshman Maddie Richardson took third in the three-meter diving competition with a score of 152.64.
UNO's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Foiles, junior Cami Hansberry, sophomore Whitney Korgan and freshman Ashley Kneifl finished in a close second with a time of 1:40.83.
"Today's loss was disappointing," head coach Todd Samland said. "This is the largest gap we have experienced to UNI since we started the series in 2003-04. It's not that we do not have the talent; on paper we matched up extremely well with UNI. I have to tip my hat to Coach Simmer and the Panthers -- they were focused and ready."
The Mavs return to action with a road meet at Nebraska on Nov. 11 at 5 p.m
