EMPORIA, Kan. –
The UNO volleyball team dropped a 3-0 sweep at Emporia State Friday night, falling 25-23, 25-7, 25-20 at White Auditorium. With the loss, the Mavericks are 4-20 on the year, while ESU improves to 13-7 (5-2 MIAA).

Senior setter Emily Myers finished with 30 set assists and 18 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. Myers also moved up to third all-time in school history for career assists, passing former Maverick Kylie Lebeda, who had 3,951 from 2000 to 2003. Myers now has 3,975 as a four-year starter, and she is 10 away from moving ahead of Pam Largen (3,984) for second on the list.

Junior outside hitter Natalie Ebke also grabbed her team-leading 11th double-double of the season, notching 10 kills and 15 digs. Senior libero Angie Reicks tacked on 15 digs of her own, and sophomore outside hitter Abby Sorensen added 10. At the net, senior middle blocker Brittany Hanssen totaled three blocks while also chipping in eight kills.

Emporia State hit .157 as a team and was topped by nine kills from Paige Vanderpool.

ESU jumped out to an 8-2 run to open the first set, but the Mavericks cut it to one by 12-11 with the help of three kills from Hanssen and one apiece from Ebke and junior outside hitter Sydney Fleege. After the Hornets went up by four, UNO called a timeout and posted three straight kills from Hanssen and Fleege to make it a one-point margin again. A 4-0 run by Emporia State made it 21-17, but back-to-back scores from Ebke brought it to 22-20. Ebke put down two more kills during the set, but it was not enough as ESU squeaked out a 24-23 win.

The second set saw Emporia State take a 9-6 lead, and UNO struggled against the Hornets' subsequent 10-0 run that made it 19-6. A kill by Hanssen gave the Mavs their final point of the game, as ESU took a 25-7 victory to go ahead by two sets.

In game three, Emporia State opened with six unanswered points, then stretched its lead to 8-2. Two UNO kills from Fleege and junior middle blocker Lizzy Mach made it 8-4, but the Hornets held the Mavs off by at least four for the remainder of the set. Despite five kills by Fleege and all three of Hanssen's blocks for the night in the last set, ESU was able to prevail with a 25-20 win and the match sweep.

UNO returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, facing another former MIAA opponent with a match at Washburn. Gametime is set for 6 p.m. at WU's Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.
