VERMILLION, S.D. – The UNO volleyball team faced South Dakota in a rematch on Tuesday night, but the Mavericks suffered a 3-0 sweep (24-26, 25-20, 28-26) at the hands of the Coyotes. With the loss, Nebraska Omaha drops to 4-19 on the year, while USD improves to 11-10.
Junior outside hitter
Natalie Ebke grabbed her team-leading 10th double-double of the year with 13 kills and 11 digs. Senior setter
Emily Myers narrowly missed a double-double of her own, tallying 31 assists and nine digs for the night. In addition, senior libero
Angie Reicks finished with 19 digs to her credit.
Myers currently ranks fourth all-time in school history for career assists, with 3,945 assists over four years as a starter. She is just seven away from passing former Maverick Kylie Lebeda for third (3,951).
South Dakota was led by Kendall Kritenbrink's 15 kills, and setter Bailey Lupardus put up a match-high 38 assists. Carol Logato and Riley Haug chipped in 23 and 13 digs, respectively.
As a team, UNO finished with five total team blocks to USD's four, marking the 13th match this season in which the Mavs have outblocked their opponent.
With the first game tied at 3-3 early on, the Mavericks jumped out to a 10-5 lead, helped by three kills from Ebke and another pair from junior middle blocker
Lizzy Mach. USD came back to tie it at 12-12, and the two squads locked scores again at 18-18. Two kills by sophomore right side hitter
Ali Jansen, as well as three Coyote errors, pushed UNO to a 23-20 advantage, but South Dakota knotted the score twice more en route to a 24-24 lock. Though Jansen's kill kept the Mavericks in the game, two straight scores by Kritenbrink and Kim Bulaga put the game away in USD's favor at 26-24.
Nebraska Omaha had its highest team attacking percentage of the night in the second set, hitting .308 with just one error. It was not enough, however, as South Dakota led the entire game and allowed the Mavs to get within only one point. Behind eight kills from Kritenbrink, the Coyotes took a two-game lead with a 25-20 win.
In set three, sophomore outside hitter
Abby Sorensen led UNO with six kills, while Ebke added five of her own. USD and UNO opened with six tied scores until a 9-9 lock, when the Mavericks went up 12-9 by capitalizing on three straight Coyote attack errors. The score tied another nine times, with a kill and an ace from Sorensen kept UNO alive at 24-24. Nebraska Omaha nearly edged South Dakota for the set with a 25-24 advantage, but USD hung on and put up back-to-back kills by Kritenbrink and Tahnee Reed to close the game at 28-26 and take the match sweep.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Oct. 14, facing Emporia State at 7 p.m. in Emporia, Kan.
