KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UNO volleyball team outhit nationally-ranked Truman, but surrendered a 3-2 loss – 15-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 12-15 -- at to the Bulldogs at Pershing Arena on Saturday night. With the loss, the Mavericks fell to 12-9 (2-7 MIAA) on the year, while TSU improved to 17-3 (6-2 MIAA).
Senior outside hitter
Kayla Uhing led the way with 17 kills and 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Junior setter
Emily Myers also had her second straight double-double with 42 assists and 16 digs. Additionally, freshman outside hitter
Abby Sorensen totaled nine kills with two service aces and four blocks, which led the Mavericks at the net.
Defensively, junior libero
Angie Reicks notched 21 digs, and sophomore outside hitter
Natalie Ebke had 20 of her own.
Truman took the first two games, 25-15 and 25-22, hitting a combined .229 to Nebraska-Omaha's .071.
Facing a sweep, the Mavericks rebounded for a 25-17 win and their best hitting percentage of the night -- .333 -- in the third game. TSU took the first two points, but a 10-1 run fueled by two kills and two aces by Sorensen put UNO ahead with a sizable lead. The Mavs doubled their score before the Bulldogs reached double digits, taking a 21-8 advantage. Truman came back to make it 23-16, but Nebraska-Omaha put it away with the help of kills from Uhing and freshman
Megan Hutson Hutson.
In the fourth set, UNO again outhit TSU, .279 to .093, earning a 25-19 victory. The Mavericks capitalized on the Bulldogs' nine errors while committing just two of their own. The two squads kept it close until the 14-14 mark, when the Mavs went up by four on three straight Truman errors. The extended the margin to 22-17 with a Sorensen kill, and two more kills by Uhing and sophomore defensive specialist
Michaela Ziola sealed the win.
Tied with two wins apiece, TSU and UNO moved into the decisive fifth set. Three straight kills aided the Mavs' early 5-1 lead, which they maintained until Truman tied it at 11-all. Lauren Radix and defending Division II freshman of the year Megan Sharpe then put down back-to-back kills to regain the lead. Junior middle blocker
Brittany Hanssen kept UNO in the hunt with a kill that brought her team within one, but a kill from Allison Barker and a final Maverick error helped the Bulldogs edge out a 15-12 win and the overall 3-2 match victory.
Barker topped TSU with 14 kills on .273 hitting, along with 14 digs. Radix also had double-figure kills with 10, and added a match-best five blocks.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15, hosting Central Missouri at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
