TOPEKA, Kan. – The UNO volleyball team recorded sweeps of Dallas Baptist and St. Edward's at the Washburn Lady Blues Classic on Saturday, finishing the weekend with a 3-1 performance. The Mavericks claimed the win over DBU 25-15, 25-19, 25-10, followed by a 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 victory over the Hilltoppers. With the wins, Nebraska-Omaha improved to 12-6 (2-4 MIAA) on the year.
GAME 1 – UNO 3, DALLAS BAPTIST 0
Two Mavericks reached double figures in kills in the 3-0 sweep of Dallas Baptist (9-10), as sophomore outside hitter
Natalie Ebke notched 15 on .467 hitting, and senior outside hitter
Kayla Uhing had 10 with a .348 performance. Junior middle blocker
Brittany Hanssen also had a strong day with seven kills and three blocks, and freshman
Megan Hutson finished with six kills and a pair of blocks.
UNO outhit the Patriots .352 to .020 in team attack percentage, and DBU had no player with more than five kills to her credit.
Dallas Baptist opened with a 5-2 lead before UNO went on a 7-2 run to go ahead. Four kills from Uhing and two service aces by Ebke helped put the first game away at 25-15.
The Mavericks went up 15-10 in game two, before the Patriots chipped away to narrow the gap to two at 17-15. UNO would not surrender, however, as four kills by Ebke pushed the Mavs to a 25-19 win.
Nebraska-Omaha was dominant in the final set, winning 25-10. The Mavericks, spurred by five Ebke kills, hit at a .419 team clip and took an early 9-3 lead. The corps of UNO freshmen – Sorensen, Hutson and
Ali Jansen -- was key in the final minutes, accounting for four kills. Jansen and Ebke tallied four straight kills to nail down the win.
GAME 2 – UNO 3, ST. EDWARD'S 0
In the second match, Uhing led the way with 16 kills on .433 hitting, and freshman
Abby Sorensen totaled a career-high 10 kills with a .471 performance, as well as four service aces. Ebke also contributed nine more kills, and Hutson had six.
Junior setter
Emily Myers had 34 set assists, guiding UNO to a season-high attack percentage of .410 to the Hilltoppers'.189 mark. Defensively, Uhing tallied four blocks, while junior libero
Angie Reicks put up 14 digs.
St. Edwards' Whitney Rhoden finished with 11 kills to lead the Hilltoppers.
In the first set, UNO took a 9-3 lead and never looked back. Up 23-15, the two teams traded kills, and a service ace by St. Edward's Lindy Luleff, coupled with a UNO error, brought the Hilltoppers within five. But Ebke's final kill sealed the win at 25-19.
In the second set, the Mavericks limited St. Edward's to .129 hitting, notching a .406 average themselves on the way to a 25-16 victory. The final set was the Mavs' again, and they earned a 25-15 win to take their second sweep of the day.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5, hosting Northwest Missouri State at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
