JOPLIN, Mo. -- The UNO volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match at Missouri Southern, falling 15-25, 13-25, 21-25 on Tuesday night at Young Gymnasium. With the loss, the Mavericks are 12-11 (2-9 MIAA), while MSSU improves to 14-9 (4-7 MIAA).
Freshman outside hitter Abby Sorensen was Nebraska-Omaha's leading offensive threat, finishing with nine kills on .368 hitting. Sorensen and junior middle blocker Brittany Hansen tallied two blocks apiece, and junior libero Angie Reicks totaled 12 digs. Freshman Miranda Wisehart made her Maverick debut at setter, notching 16 set assists, while starter Emily Myers finished with nine assists.
Additionally, senior outside hitter Kayla Uhing had six kills, and sophomore outside hitter Natalie Ebke and freshman outside hitter Megan Hutson had five apiece.
Missouri Southern was led by Ashlee Russell's 14 digs, as well as Jeanna Feldmann, who had 13. Amelia Judge topped the effort at the net with four blocks. The Lions had a .327 team hitting performance for the night.
MSSU took an 11-8 lead in the first game, but the Mavs brought it within one with help from kills by Sorensen and a Lion error. Southern responded with eight unanswered points on four kills, broken up by a kill from Hutson, who added two more before the end of the set. After an MSSU service error made it 23-15, the Lions used back-to-back kills to take the game at 25-15.
In the second set, the Mavs took advantage of three consecutive errors to go up 3-0, but Misouri Southern came back to make it 8-5. Uhing and Sorensen put down two kills, and two Lion errors tied the game at nine-all. MSSU then went on an 11-1 run, giving UNO a sizable deficit to overcome. Despite a pair of kills by sophomore Sydney Fleege and another by Sorensen, Southern took the win at 25-13.
The Lions had an early lead in the final game, but the Mavericks hit .212 as a team for their best attack percentage of the night. With the score tied at 10-10, UNO kept it close and matched the game again at 15-15 and 18-18. Despite the effort, MSSU grabbed a 25-21 set win and the overall match with a 3-0 sweep.
UNO returns to action on Friday, Oct. 22, hosting Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
