JOPLIN, Mo. - The Mavericks quickly fell behind big and couldn't come back in a 96-73 loss at Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped Nebraska-Omaha to 13-3 overall and 6-3 in the MIAA while the Lions improved to 10-6 and 4-5 in the league. The setbak was also their first on the road after winning their first four road games.
After a 3-pointer by
Jeff Martin gave UNO a 4-2 lead, the Lions exploded with a 28-2 run to take a 30-6 lead at the 10:00 mark of the first half.
The Mavericks missed 11 of 12 shots in that stretch and they turned the ball over 10 times.
Overall, the Mavs shot 39 percent as a team while the Lions shot 49 percent. Each team had 20 turnovers and MSSU won the rebound battle, 48-38.
Tyler Bullock led UNO with 19 points off an 8-of-19 performance from the field.
Jeff Martin hit three 3-pointers to help him to 13 points and
Eugene Bain had nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
UNO was down by 23 at the 9:29 mark of the second half and then went on a 16-4 run to pull within 11 with five minutes left.
The Lions then hit their final eight free throws in the last three minutes to help push the lead back above 20 points.
Three different Lions scored 20 or more points. Keane Thomann led with 22 and Mariun Price and Jason Adams each had 20. Thomann and Adams each had double-doubles with double-figure rebounds.
The Mavericks will return to action at Sapp Fieldhouse Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. game against Pittsburg State.
