LAKELAND, Fla. - The Mavericks defeated Bemidji State, 3-1 in their first match Saturday at the Florida Southern Classic and then they topped sixth-ranked Grand Valley State by a similar 3-1 score to finish the tournament 2-2 and improve to 6-2 on the year.
Nebraska-Omaha will continue action on the road Wednesday at 7 p.m. at in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney.
Ellen Thommes had a dozen kills and hit .545 against the Beavers in the opener and Kelli Goesse added 10 kills. Thommes also led the Mavs above the net with seven blocks as the Maverick defense put down 11 of BSU's attack attempts.
Emily Myers had 40 assists in the match and
Angie Reicks led the back row with 21 digs.
In the second match three Mavericks reached double figures in kills with Goesser leading with 17, Thommes adding 12 and
Lizzy Mach getting 11.
Brittany Hanssen led with four blocks, Myers added 49 assists and Reicks had 29 digs.
After getting seven kills in the season-opener, Thommes has now reached double figures in each of the last seven matches.
