Kelli Goeser led three Mavericks in double-figure kills with 14 as Nebraska-Omaha cruised to a 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 win over Angelo State in the final match of the UNO Volleyball Classic Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO went 4-0 in the seven-team event and moved its season record to 10-3. The Mavericks will begin MIAA play Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Missouri Southern.
Goesser had 14 kills and hit .462 as the Mavs hit .383 as a team.
Sara Kampschnieder and
Ellen Thommes added 12 kills and each hit .350 or better.
Emily Myers had 35 assists and
Angie Reicks led the back row with 12 digs.
Natalie Ebke had five service aces and Reicks added three.
UNO led throughout the entire first set. Two straight kills from Thommes made the score 3-0 UNO and then the Mavs led by six at 9-3. The Rambelles got within two late in the set at 20-18 but the Mavericks scored five of the next six points to clinch the victory.
ASU got its first lead of the night on the third point of the second set on a kill from Alaina Sivells and then two straight aces by Sara Sietsma later gave ASU a 6-3 lead. Sivells finished with eight kills to lead her team.
UNO then went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead before ASU regained it and later led by five at 16-11. UNO then went on a 10-1 run to take a 22-18 advantage. Thommes had three kills during the run and the Belles committed six errors.
The third set was tied just once at 1-1 and then an 8-1 run gave the Mavs a 9-2 lead and control of the match. A kill by Kampschnieder late in the set gave UNO a 10-point lead and then after ASU cut the lead to five at 21-16, the two teams traded points the rest of the way until
Brittany Hanssen's kill ended the match.
Thommes led the tournament field with a .429 attack percentage and Kampschnieder led with 4.00 kills per set. Myers led with 12.54 assists a set and Ebke led with 0.69 aces per set. The Mavericks hit .317 as a team in the tournament and they were the only one in the seven-team field to go undefeated.
