Ellen Thommes had 11 kills and hit .526 as the Mavericks defeated Abilene Christian, 30-28, 25-20, 25-22 Friday night in the final match of day one at the UNO Volleyball Showcase. The Mavs trailed late in every set but fought back for the sweep and a 2-0 start to the season.
Kelli Goesser led the team with 13 kills and
Sara Kampschnieder had 10.
Angie Reicks had 18 digs for UNO and
Emily Myers had a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs.
UNO trailed, 18-13 in set one before Myers served five straight points to give UNO a 21-20 lead. Eight ties followed before an ACU (0-2) attack error ended the set to give UNO the lead.
In set two UNO was down, 19-18 before a 7-1 run gave UNO the set victory and in the final set UNO was down, 18-17 before putting the Wildcats away.
Thommes led the tournament field on day one with a .515 attack percenrage and
Lizzy Mach was second with a .441 effort.
The Mavericks will wrap up action in the tournament against Dallas Baptist Saturday at 11:45 a.m and then against North Alabama at 6:30 p.m.
