Mavs Build Big 1st-Half Lead But Jays Come Away Wi

Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks led three times in the first half, including once by as much as 10 points, but Creighton led at the half and held on for a 93-77 exhibition win Sunday afternoon at Qwest Center Omaha.

Junior guard #Jeff Martin#'s hot shooting produced a game-high 22 points. He was 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range and he made his first five 3-point attempts.

Three other Mavs also reached double figures. Senior guard Andrew Briger scored 16 points, junior guard #Tyler Bullock had 12 and junior forward Eugene Bain# had 10.

The Mavericks shot 60 percent in the first half while CU shot 49 percent. UNO built a 10-point advantage at 33-23 when junior guard #Torrian Harris tipped in a missed shot from Dion Curry#. That play was set up after senior forward #Matt Newman# stole the ball from P'Allen Stinnett and sent it forward to Curry.

The Bluejays shut UNO down after that basket and regained the lead. A 20-2 CU run made the score 43-35 at 3:17 and they fought off UNO's strong shooting to hold a 52-44 lead at halftime.

The Jays maintained the lead and built on it as they opened the second half strong. They led, 74-60 at the 10:00 mark after making nine of their first 11 shots in the half. The Mavericks made just five of 15 shots at that point of the half.

UNO got within eight points when Bridger hit a 3-pointer with 8:13 remaining. A 9-0 run quickly built the lead back to 17 and UNO never got within 11 after that.

Kenny Lawson Jr. led the Bluejays with 20 points of an 8-of-11 performance from the field. Stinnett and Wayne Runnels each had 12 points.

Newman and Bain led UNO with six rebounds each and Bridger led with five assists.

The Jays shot 65 percent in the second half and ended the night with a 55 percent effort from the field. The Mavs ended with a 46 percent mark. Creighton had a 39-27 advantage in rebounding and had 19 turnovers while the Mavs had 23.

The Mavericks were able to shoot 60 percent from the field in the first half and 75 percent from 3-point range thanks in part to a strong performance from Martin. He was 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the first half.

Martin's 3 at 17:20 gave the Mavericks a 7-4 lead. The Bluejays regained the lead but Martin tied the score at 18-18 with his second 3-pointer of the day. He gave the Mavs a five-point lead at 26-21 when he hit his third at 9:00 and then he gave them a six-point lead when he made another just 19 seconds later.

Martin saw his first action since playing in five early games last year. He broke his ankle and earned a medical redshirt.

To go along with their 60 percent effort from the field in the first half, the Mavericks were also strong from the free throw line. Perfect, actually. They made 14 of 14 shots from the line with Andrew Bridger going 6-of-6 and Tyler Bullock going 4-of-4. The Mavs made two more in the second half before they recorded their first miss of the day on their 17th attempt.

They finished the night 69 percent from the free throw line (22 of 32). The Jays were 59 percent (12 of 22).

The Mavericks will open the 2009-10 regular season the minute the NCAA will allow them to. They host Doane at 12:01 a.m. on November 15 at Sapp Fieldhouse. NCAA rules allow teams to play no earlier than that Sunday unless they are playing in an exempt tournament.

The Jays finished their preseason 2-0 after defeated Missouri Western, 94-69 on Wednesday.
