TOPEKA, Kan. - The Mavericks built early leads in the first and third sets Wednesday night but No. 8 Washburn came back both times and beat Nebraska-Omaha, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.
The Mavericks fell to 18-9 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA while the Lady Blues improved to 27-3 and 11-3.
Sara Kampschnieder led the Mavericks with 11 kills and
Kelli Goeser had 10.
Emily Myers had 28 assists and 12 digs for a double-double and
Angie Reicks led the back row with 13 digs.
The Mavs built a five-point lead in the opening set at 10-5. They held the lead until WU tied the match at 13-13. There were four more ties in the match, including the last at 23-23. Washburn then scored the last two points to win the set.
The Lady Blues led the entire second set and used a 6-0 run to build a 15-6 lead midway though the set.
The Mavericks had another 10-5 lead in the third set and they held it most of the way until a 6-1 run gave WU a 24-22 lead. Goesser got UNO within a point with a kill but a WU kill ended the match.
Jessica Fey led Washburn with 10 kills.
