Mavs Pull Out 82-76 Win Over Fort Lewis

WINONA, Minn. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha came from six points down in the final five minutes Saturday night to post an 82-76 NCAA Division II regional tournament win over Fort Lewis. UNO will meet No. 3 Winona State Sunday night at 7:30 in the North Central Regional.

The game will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM.

Justin Peterssen scored a career-high 22 points, with 16 coming the second half, Mitch Albers added 18 and Michael Jenkins 16 as UNO set a school record for wins, improving to 25-6. Jerry Bennett, held to six points, pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds to lead both teams.

The Skyhawks, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions, ended their season 24-6. Tim Crowell led Fort Lewis with 25 points and Devon Manning added 20.

The Mavericks led most of the first half and held a 37-33 edge at intermission before the Skyhawks turned the momentum around with a nine-point run that turned a 50-43 UNO lead into a 52-50 Fort Lewis advantage with 10 minutes left.

The Skyhawks expanded that margin to 63-57 with six minutes left on Devon Manning's layup. Maverick senior center Jerry Bennett ended a three-and-a-half-minute scoring drought when he stole the b all at midcourt and drove in for a layup to trim the lead to 63-59 with 4:57 to play

After an Andrew Bridger free throw, Petersen drilled a three-pointer and Jenkins followed with another three to give UNO the lead for good, 66-63, with 3:14 left.

UNO held three seven-point leads, but still had to survive a late scare by the Skyhawks. Tim Crowell converted a three-point play with 23 seconds left and added two free shots with 19 seconds left to pull Fort Lewis within 78-76.

Mitch Albers rescued the Mavericks with a pair of free shots with 18 seconds left and Bridger hit a pair with eight seconds left to secure the win.
