ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha men's basketball team won its first North Central Conference road game in more than two years, defeating St. Cloud State, 99-87, Thursday night at Halenbeck Hall.
No. 24 UNO improves to 19-4 on the season, 5-3 in the NCC, with its first road win in conference play since Jan. 5, 2006.
Andrew Bridger scored 25 to lead the team, with
Michael Jenkins scoring 24, as all five starters scored in double figures. The Huskies fell to 16-8, 4-5.
The Mavericks shot 56.6 percent for the game, including 11-for-22 from 3-point range, and 81.8 percent (27-for-33) at the free throw line.
St. Cloud State held a one-point lead midway through the first half, but from there the Mavs got on a roll, scoring nine-straight points, seven by Bridger. UNO would go on to a 53-42 halftime lead.
Three-pointers by Bridger and
Justin Petersen to open the second half staked the Mavericks to a 17-point lead. But the Huskies, led by Matt Schneck (23 points, seven rebounds) and David Dreas (22 points), chipped away at the lead, eventually taking a one-point lead with 5:41 remaining, 79-78.
Michael Jenkins sank four-straight free throws, followed by two consecutive jumpers by Bridger and one from Jenkins, putting UNO back up by nine. The Mavericks, who entered the week tied for first in Division in free throw shooting, continued to sink their tries to keep SCSU at bay.
Of Jenkins' 24 points, 12 came at the line on 14 attempts. Johnston finished with 18 points.
Jerry Bennett scored 14, with Petersen finishing with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
UNO looks to make another move up the standings Saturday, visiting first-place Minnesota State, Mankato, at 4 p.m.
