Kampschnieder Leads UNO to Road Win Over Lions

Box Score

JOPLIN, Mo. -- After missing the last two matches with an ankle injury, junior outside hitter #Sara Kampschnieder# returned to the court Wednesday night in dominating fashion, recording her sixth double-double of the season in leading the Mavericks to a 3-1 (25-17, 30-28, 18-25, 25-18) victory over Missouri Southern in MIAA action at Young Gymnasium.

With the win, UNO improved to 10-12 overall and 6-5 in the MIAA. The Lions fell to 6-17 and 1-10 in league play.

Kampschnieder notched 16 kills and 17 digs in the victory, while adding two blocks and a service ace. Junior middle blocker #Ellen Thommes# hit .667 in the match, narrowly missing a double-double with 12 kills and a match-high nine blocks.

Freshman #Brittany Hanssen# had seven kills on .375 hitting while adding three blocks.

Freshman setter #Emily Myers# directed UNO to a .328 hitting percentage while dishing out 43 assists and contributing with seven digs.

Paced by Thommes' four kills on .667 hitting, the Mavericks hit .323 in the first set while holding MSSU to a .103 attack percentage. Junior #Kayla Jansen# registered four digs in helping hold the Lions a .103 hitting clip in the first frame.

The Mavericks led only twice in the second set and survived six set points before pulling out the marathon victory, 30-28. With the Lions leading 24-22, UNO tied the match on a #Kelli Goeser# kill and an MSSU hitting error. Kampschnieder then saved the set with kills at 25-24, and 26-25. With UNO trailing, 27-26 and 28-27, Goeser once again kept the Mavericks alive with clutch kills each time to knot the set. After a Lion hitting error, the Mavericks ended the second frame on a block by Thommes and Hanssen.

Ironically, UNO had their highest hitting percentage of the match in the third set, hitting at a .444 clip. However, Missouri Southern countered with a lofty .567 attack percentage on 21 kills, only four errors, in 30 attempts to guide them to the 25-18 win. The Mavericks led only once in the set on a Kampschnieder kill to open the game.

The Lions continued their strong play in the fourth, racing out to a 12-8 lead. After a block by Thommes and Myers, freshman #Angie Reicks# served five-straight points aided by four Lion attack errors to give UNO a 14-12 advantage. MSSU battled back to tie the score at 15. However, UNO took back the lead for good, paced by two Kampschnieder kills and a pair of Lion attack errors, giving the Mavs a four-point cushion. Sophomore #Kayla Uhing# entered the match late in the fourth and blasted the final two UNO kills to end the match.

The Mavericks return to the Sapp Fieldhouse on Friday night for a 7 p.m. MIAA contest against 15th-ranked Pittsburg State.

Notes:
* Kayla Jansen needs just seven more digs to become the 21st player in school history to record 1,000 career digs.
* With her nine block assists tonight, Ellen Thommes moved into 15th place on the all-time career charts with 242 total block assists.
