OMAHA, Neb. – Four different Mavericks scored goals as the University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team defeated Missouri Western 4-0 on Thursday night at a wet UNO Soccer Field. With the win, UNO improves to 8-3-0 and 6-3-0 in the MIAA. The Griffons dropped to 2-11-2 overall and 1-9-1 in the MIAA.
The Mavericks scored two first half goals just three minutes apart to jump on the Griffons early. Freshman Hilary Horvatic started the scoring attack with a goal in the 16th minute. Horvatic received a cross pass from #Lindsey Nealon# that slipped through the Missouri Western defense and put a shot on goal that beat Griffon goalkeeper Jeanna Weis.
Senior #MaryClaire Murnan# continued the scoring attack in the 19th minute, as she worked a give-and-go with senior #Casey Bigsby# and unloaded a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in.
The Mavericks added to their lead in the second half on a penalty kick after Weis tackled sophomore midfielder #Becky Heffling# in the box. Heffling converted the penalty shot, scoring her first career goal.
Nealon finished the scoring for the Mavericks, netting a goal at the 89:40 mark of the match. Nealon lobbed a shot over of the head of Weis in the upper right corner off a pass from #Tara Wegehaupt#.
UNO dominated play throughout the contest, out-shooting the Griffons 17-3, including a 10-2 advantage in the first 45 minutes. The Mavericks managed six corner kicks, while Missouri Western had four.
The Mavericks will look to continue their strong offensive play when they host Emporia State (3-8-1, 1-6-1 MIAA) on Satruday, Oct. 18. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field.
