Biography


2000-2001 (Sophomore):
Started out the season recording points in six-straight games, tallying 3-8-11...Season was cut short to 24 games after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury ...Recorded a career-high for points with three assists against Michigan State on Oct. 26...Finished sixth on the team in scoring...Had five multi-point games and surpassed his freshman totals for both goals and assists...Had one power play goal on the year, coming against Alaska Fairbanks on Dec. 8 and recorded the game-winning goal against Colgate on Oct. 19.


1999-2000 (Freshman):
Saw action in 32 games for UNO during freshman campaign, recording 8-7-15...Got his first collegiate point in his fourth game as a Maverick with a goal in the win against Ferris State on Oct. 27...Was one of the hottest scorers for the Mavs down the stretch with at least one point in UNO’s last nine weekends, recording 7-5-12 in 12 of those 16 games...He ended the year on a five-game point streak and was +7 in those contests...Tied for fourth on the team with four power play goals...His only multiple-point game of the year came against Northern Michigan on Jan. 19 where his two power play goals lifted UNO to a 4-2 victory...Scored the game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory at Western Michigan on Feb. 9...Had the most shots by any freshman with 64.

Junior Hockey:
Had an impressive career with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League in 1999-2000...He tallied 33-42-75 for Green Bay as the team captured the USHL playoff crown...Was named the playoff’s most valuable player after tallying 6-4-10 in six games...In addition to to the playoff MVP honor, Smith was named the national junior player of the year by USA hockey.

Personal:
Born April 3, 1979 in Madison, WI, the son of Louis and Barbara Smith...Graduated from Oregon Senior High School in Madison...Hobbies are golf and fishing...Was drawn to UNO by the great fan support and the academic opportunites that the university has to offer.

Coach Kemp on Smith:
“Aaron had an excellent season going a year ago and suffered an untimely knee injury that finished his season prematurely. We're expecting Aaron, as he's grown and matured over his first two years in our program, to come into his junior year and have his best season. We are looking for him to improve his play at both ends of the rink.”
