GREELEY, Colo. — Strong starting pitching and power hitting lifted Omaha to a 6-3 win at Northern Colorado, moving the Mavericks back into sole possession of second place in the Summit League baseball standings.
Sophomore
Maddox Meyer pitched a career-long 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts to improve to 4-4.
Nate Moquin pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win and snap a three-game losing streak for Omaha.
Omaha (15-22, 10-9 Summit) and Northern Colorado (13-32, 10-11 Summit) wrap up the regular-season series Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in Greeley. All Summit League games are streamed on the Summit League Network via Midco Sports.
Solo home runs from
Cardel Dick in the fourth inning and
Tyler Bishop in the fifth gave Omaha the lead. Dick's homer was his team-leading eighth, while Bishop's marked the 22nd of his Mavericks career.
Bishop added an RBI double in the seventh and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. The league's leading hitter,
Jackson Trout, tripled home a pair of runs in a three-run eighth to extend the lead to 6-2. Trout finished 2-for-4, recording his team-best 19th multi-hit game of the season.
A pair of double plays halted Bears rallies, including one in the ninth. Omaha's defense turned in several key plays, highlighted in the seventh inning when catcher
Alexandre Laurence threw out a would-be base stealer to end another Northern Colorado threat. The freshman made his first start as a Maverick and recorded his first career hit.
Following road trips to Kansas State and conference-leading Oral Roberts next week, the Mavericks return home to close out the regular season against South Dakota State, May 13-16. Tickets for all Omaha home games are available at OMavs.com/Tickets.
