MINNEAPOLIS — Southern Illinois scored five runs in the first two innings on its way to a 9-1 win over Omaha Baseball on Friday afternoon during the opening day of the Gopher Baseball Tournament.
Omaha (4-8) had baserunners in each of the first six innings, but the Mavericks weren't able to string together enough hits to mount a comeback.
The Mavericks stranded eight baserunners in the first six innings.
Omaha's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth as
Hayden Lewis singled to right field to score
Tyler Bishop.
Seven Mavericks had hits on the day as
Jackson Trout singled and doubled to lead the way. Trout has 20 hits on the season and is batting a team-best .426.
Southern Illinois (5-7) got to Omaha starter
Maddox Meyer, dropping him to 1-1 this season. Meyer entered the day with a 1.38 ERA, but he allowed five runs and seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Omaha continues play at US Bank Stadium at 3 p.m. CT Saturday against Northwestern.
